James Heiss, PhD
Assistant professor of Hydrogeology in the Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Massachusetts – LowellMr. Heiss’s research entails coastal groundwater-surface water interactions, climate change and sea level rise impacts to coastal groundwater resources, and chemical fluxes along the land-sea transition zone. His current research focuses on the hydrologic forcings (waves, tides, currents, extreme precipitation, and storm surge) that move water and chemicals between aquifers and nearshore surface water bodies. He explores these hydrologic processes using field experiments, numerical models, and quantitative synthesis of large datasets. Prior to joining UMass Lowell, Dr. Heiss was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from the University of Delaware.
Christopher J. Russoniello, PhD
Hydrogeologist in the University of Rhode Island Department of GeosciencesMr. Russoniello is a hydrogeologist in the University of Rhode Island Department of Geosciences. His work focuses on coastal groundwater, saltwater intrusion, surface water/groundwater interactions, cold-region hydrology, and the impacts of rising seas and changing climate on freshwater resources. Prior to joining URI, he earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from the University of Delaware, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Syracuse University, and was assistant professor at West Virginia University. Mr. Russoniello has served on 15 graduate committees, mentored many undergraduate researchers and is current and former mentor to two NSF EAR postdoctoral fellows. Teaching interests focus on the coast, its complex processes, the interaction between the ocean and groundwater, and environmental data skills. Outside work Mr. Russoniello enjoys playing on water (liquid and frozen) and spending time with his wife, daughter, and dog.

Founder and President of Glabe Consulting Services, Inc.Mr. Glabe is President of Glabe Consulting Services, Inc., a company he founded in 1985 as an engineering firm that provided engineering design and analysis for the temporary structure industry. The firm has evolved into a broader company providing expertise for contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers. These services included product testing and evaluation, product design, specific project solutions, training, and expert witness services. In 2011 the company DH Glabe & Associates was established to provide the engineering services formerly provided by Glabe Consulting Services, Inc. He was the founding partner of the company. Glabe Consulting Services, Inc., continues to provide litigation support. Utilizing the experience he received from the many projects and different facets of construction with which he has been involved, Mr. Glabe developed an interest in construction training. He began by providing scaffold training for the construction industry. Mr. Glabe co-developed a scaffold training seminar held at Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, Indiana, and developed and instructed the Train the Trainer Scaffold Course at two certified OSHA Training Institutes. Additionally, he was an instructor for Federal OSHA and CalOSHA and has developed and conducted numerous additional training and skill evaluation programs for the industry. Mr. Glabe also taught the official OSHA course in excavation and soil mechanics in addition to the official OSHA course in fall protection. He also provided training in concrete shoring and forming. In addition to consulting engineer Mr. Glabe also serves as an expert witness in construction related matters, specifically in the areas of trenching/excavation, scaffolding, fall protection, shoring/forming, and access. He attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Glabe is a Licensed Professional Engineer in numerous states and a Structural Engineer in Utah. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers [ASCE] committee: “Design Loads During Construction,” and is actively involved in the Scaffold & Access Industry Association [SAIA]. WebinarSeptember 7, 2022Eugene H. Brislin Jr.
Speakers
Eugene H. Brislin Jr., P.E./S.E.
Structural Engineer in Summerville, SCMr. Brislin has been a professional engineer for more than 21 years and he has designed many structures and performed many different types of analysis in that time. He has worked for a steel fabricator, an architectural/engineering firm and a seismic consultant, and he has been in private practice for over 13 years. Mr. Brislin earned his BSCE degree from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and his MSCE degree from the University of South Carolina. He has completed all his course work for his PhD degree but has not completed his dissertation. His graduate study work has been in mathematical elasticity. Mr. Brislin has worked on a wide variety of projects from arenas such as Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Edward Jones Arena in St. Louis, Missouri, to renovation and seismic retrofit of the South Carolina State House and the design of the Columbia South Carolina Museum of Art. He has done stress analysis on weapons systems for the Department of Defense and has consulted on cellular telephone concealment projects. Mr. Brislin’s company routinely performs modal analysis of structures to provide more accurate seismic loads and to reduce the cost of seismic requirements through more advanced analysis techniques. The company is knowledgeable concerning structural dynamics and can perform a full dynamic analysis for complicated structures, and ductility requirements in concrete and masonry as well as welded steel moment connection requirements on toughness of steel.
