Professor and Chair, University of Alaska AnchorageOriginally from New Hampshire, Dr. Hamel completed a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts and a master’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Between degrees he worked as a bridge inspector, roadway designer, and bridge engineer in Boston and as a structural engineer in Denver designing hospitals, museums, and courthouses. After earning his license as a professional engineer in Colorado, he returned to school and completed his doctorate in Structural Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Hamel’s research was located at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison and included a three-year long creep study of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). Dr. Hamel joined the faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2011, where his current research includes the performance of plywood/polyurethane structural insulated panels (SIPs), the strength of accreted ice on piles at the Port of Alaska, and a reliability analysis of flawed wood-frame structures during seismic events. At UAA, he teaches undergraduate courses in mechanics, structural analysis and steel design, and graduate-level courses that cover loads on structures, structural reliability, advanced structural analysis, finite-element analysis, and advanced steel design.

He has worked for a steel fabricator, an architectural/engineering firm and a seismic consultant, and he has been in private practice for over 13 years. Mr. Brislin earned his BSCE degree from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and his MSCE degree from the University of South Carolina. He has completed all his course work for his PhD degree but has not completed his dissertation. His graduate study work has been in mathematical elasticity. Mr. Brislin has worked on a wide variety of projects from arenas such as Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Edward Jones Arena in St. Louis, Missouri, to renovation and seismic retrofit of the South Carolina State House and the design of the Columbia South Carolina Museum of Art. He has done stress analysis on weapons systems for the Department of Defense and has consulted on cellular telephone concealment projects. Mr. Brislin’s company routinely performs modal analysis of structures to provide more accurate seismic loads and to reduce the cost of seismic requirements through more advanced analysis techniques. The company is knowledgeable concerning structural dynamics and can perform a full dynamic analysis for complicated structures, and ductility requirements in concrete and masonry as well as welded steel moment connection requirements on toughness of steel.

He has investigated numerous failure cases and/or performance-related problems for private clients and is responsible for determining the cause and extent of damage to structures, including, but not limited to, roof truss failures, roof collapses, foundation failures, storm-related damage, etc. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University and previously worked in the construction industry for a prominent construction manager/general contractor on some high-profile projects, such as The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Cavaliers Training Facility. In addition, Mr. Bosela worked as a structural engineer providing design and analysis for structural products for the construction sector and as a structural design engineer for sports, commercial and industrial markets. Some of the construction products include, adjustable steel columns, telescoping posts and insulated concrete form (ICF) bracing. For the telescoping posts, he developed a design approach for providing a safe load capacity. Mr. Bosela has also worked with several product evaluation and testing agencies in the U.S. and Canada.

Dr. Paul Bosela is a professor emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Cleveland State University and partner in Bosela Forensic Engineering Consultants, LLC. He retired from CSU after 28 years of service, including ten years as department chair. Dr. Bosela has extensive forensic engineering experience in the investigation of structural failures. He has investigated hundreds of failure cases for private clients, including the determination of the cause and extent of damages to structures, such as roof collapse, foundation failure, beam failure, collapse during construction, building envelope problems, etc. He has served on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Forensic Engineering Division (FED), formerly the Technical Council on Forensic Engineering (TCFE) since 1986, including terms as chairman of both the Executive and Education Committees. He has lectured on forensic engineering throughout the U.S., and in Costa Rica, Ecuador, India, Italy, and Great Britain, and he strives to bring lessons learned from failures into the civil engineering curriculum. Dr. Bosela was a co-editor of the Proceedings of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ASCE Forensic Engineering Congresses, and co-editor of Failure Case Studies in Civil Engineering: Structures, Foundations and the Geo-Environment (ASCE 2013), as well as numerous journal articles and conference presentations.

He has served as a testifying expert in several cases. Mr. Drerup has also developed and retrofit designs for existing buildings. Since 2011, BSC has grown to a nationally-recognized firm under Mr. Burns’ leadership with experts licensed throughout the United States in fields such as: structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, mold, industrial hygiene, drones, as well as fire and explosion. Mr. Burns is the author of two patents pending pertaining to forensic investigations, and he has testified in multiple trials, depositions, arbitrations, and/or mediations.
Mr. Burns’ forensic experience includes structural design, failure analysis, construction defect, premises safety/ injury (including trips and slips), water losses, wind assessments, hail assessments, flooring assessments, foundation performance evaluations (including movement attributed to plumbing leaks), building envelopes, air and water penetration (spray testing), and much more. Mr. Burns and BSC staff under his responsible charge perform inspections on commercial, residential, multi-family, industrial, and government facilities as well as automobile, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems routinely.
His experience has also included work as a structural engineer on nationwide projects, as a project manager for a civil engineering firm in Houston and Dallas, Texas, and as an adjunct instructor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Houston.
