Speakers

Jason Charalambides

PhD, PE, M.ASCE, AIA, ENV_SP
Dr. Charalambides earned his B.A. degree in Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley. He possesses a CEAA graduate degree in History and Theory of Architecture from the École d’Architecture de Paris Villemin (France), an M.A. degree in Urban Rehabilitation and City Politics from the École Supérieure De Commerce Marseille-Provence (France), and a Master of Architecture and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. The subject of his doctorate dissertation was on the design automation for tensegrity structures. Dr. Charalambides has been involved in higher education since 1999, teaching at institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin and Frederick University in Cyprus. Recently he is faculty at Morgan State University in Baltimore, teaching courses in Steel Design, Reinforced concrete Design, Masonry, and Architectural Design Studio, and he conducted research and experiments on concrete mixtures and additives. He is a recipient of a number of awards including a Fulbright scholarship, and he participated in numerous projects as practicing architect in Europe and in the US. He is a registered architect, civil engineer, and sustainability professional ENV_SP in Europe and in the US. His research interests are on design automation, numerical methods for construction professionals, space structures, construction materials, and sustainable design, focusing specifically on passive energy control and building materials.

Course Title: Structural Design Loads Under the ASCE 7 Standard

Delivery Method: Live

Course Description: This is a 7.0 hour live lecture presentation with the instructors and students together in the same room. It will be conducted in a handicap-accessible conference room with ample seating space and writing surface for all attendees. Bound written materials, authored by the faculty, will be distributed to all participants at the program. Attendance will be monitored and reported to AIA/CES. This course covers the types of structural loads, building classifications, and dead, soil, live, snow, ice, wind, and earthquake load design considerations.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to determine the weight of materials and structures and describe how soil loads are established.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe load determinations and design considerations for wind loads and earthquake (seismic) loads.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and describe the types of loads on structures, classify types of buildings and structures, and discuss load considerations for modifying or expanding existing structures.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to calculate snow and ice loads, including unbalanced, drifting and sliding loads.
