Description
A rendering looks right until the calculation underneath it wasn’t.
A citation reads convincingly until nobody can find the source.
A drafting shortcut saves an afternoon, until it costs a client’s trust.
AI can draft, summarize, and speed up almost everything in a design practice.
It can also fail with total confidence and never tell you it did.
So if you’re already using AI casually but aren’t sure how to prompt it well, don’t know what context is safe to share, or can’t tell a good AI answer from a confidently wrong one, this training is for you.
Join Michael Lynn as he walks through the judgment, context, and prompting skills you need to move from AI aware to AI confident, fast…
…PLUS gives you a live, side by side demonstration built from real design tasks, not generic examples, so you can see exactly what the difference between a thin prompt and real context looks like.
Drawing on his work at AI & Ecology helping professionals use AI with judgment rather than blind trust, this training will help architects, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers, and other design professionals build the habits, prompts, and checks that keep AI a fast, reliable drafting partner rather than a liability.
Don’t let a confidently wrong AI answer make it into your next set of drawings, specs, or client deliverables.

Agenda:
Presented by Michael Lynn
About This AI Session
- Not technical, it’s about judgment
- AI aware to confident, fast
- A starting map, practice does the rest
What AI Actually Is, and Why It Matters to Your Work
- Word prediction, not thinking
- A drafting partner, not a source of truth
Context: The Foundation of Good Output
- Supply the context only you have, feed it your own docs, know what belongs where
- Connectors: your files, same confidentiality, never paste in confidential info
- More context isn’t always better, manage AI’s limited attention span
Prompting: Getting Results You Can Use
- Strong prompts: ask questions the right way
- Getting more than just answers
- Save reusable prompts as “skills”
When to Trust AI, and When Not To
- Just because AI can, doesn’t mean AI should
- AI fails confidently, fabrications, wrong data
- Real cases: bad calc, fake citations, some things only you can judge
- Four quadrants: human vs. machine difficulty
- Know your gates, “AI was wrong” isn’t a defense
Live Demonstration: Context Changes Everything
- Same task, twice, thin prompt vs. real context
- Narrated, pre-planned walkthrough
- Presenter run, not audience run
What Attendees Will Be Able to Do
- Explain AI’s confident mistakes, set context, prompt well
- Use the four quadrant grid, run their own gates
- Spot failure modes, reduce risk

Course Title: Design Smarter with AI: A Practical Guide for Design Professionals
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: This two-hour course equips design professionals with the judgment, prompting skills, and verification habits needed to use AI reliably in practice. Instruction examines how AI models work, why they fail confidently, how to supply effective context, and how to evaluate which tasks are appropriate to delegate to AI versus which require human oversight.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain why AI models can produce confidently incorrect outputs and recognize the specific risks these failures pose to the safety and code compliance of building designs and specifications.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to apply prompting techniques and context-setting strategies that improve the reliability of AI-generated design content, reducing the likelihood that errors in calculations, material specifications, or regulatory interpretations make it into construction documents.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to use a structured framework to evaluate which design tasks can be appropriately delegated to AI and which require human judgment, ensuring that life safety decisions are not delegated to AI without adequate professional review.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to identify common AI failure modes and implement personal and firm-level verification checks that prevent inaccurate AI output from advancing into drawings, specifications, or client deliverables in ways that could compromise the well-being of building occupants.
