Sean James, NPD, FLP

Master Gardener, Owner of ‘Sean James Consulting & Design’.

Named by Landscape Ontario as 2020 and 2021’s Garden Communicator of the Year, gardening has been Mr. James’ hobby and profession for over 40 years. A graduate of Niagara Parks School of  Horticulture, a Master Gardener, writer, and teacher, he focuses on eco-gardening techniques, which makes sense since he grew up surrounded by nature. He has spoken from the Maritimes to Seattle and landscaped from Nova Scotia to California. Mr. James has had the honor to be part of creating the Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide, the Grow-Me-Instead guide, the Ontario Horticultural Apprenticeship Curriculum and the national Red Seal Occupational Standard, and the Master Gardeners Reference Manual. He has participated in chairing the Environmental Stewardship Committee for Landscape Ontario, the Environmental Committee for the Perennial Plant Association, moderating the Master Gardeners of Ontario Facebook page, judging the All-American Selections garden competition and Hamilton’s Monarch Awards. Mr. James has been the Ontario spokesperson for Garden Days Canada and he has appeared on many radio shows and on television and has instructed at the college level for 17 years. He owns ‘Sean James Consulting & Design’.

Mr. Lai is a thought leader in sustainability, resiliency, and conservation with over 30 years’ experience in landscape architectural design and planning. In addition to his extensive expertise in sustainable design and water issues, his facilitation and communication skills enable him to focus and maximize the creative energies of project collaborators toward innovative, yet practical solutions. Mr. Lai’s commitment to environmental advocacy is reflected in his teaching and speaking engagements, as well as his active involvement in the Los Angeles professional sustainability community. He is currently a Landscape Architecture Practice Builder for Kimley-Horn in Los Angeles, California.

Course Title: Xeriscaping in the United States

Course Description: This course is intended to assist design professionals in creating xeriscapes; landscapes which are intended to eliminate the need for irrigation. This course explains what xeriscaping is, how to design a xeriscape, the various drought-tolerant plants, net-zero water and alternate sources for irrigation.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss what xeriscaping is, understand the importance, consider climate zones, soil and precipitation, and identify water conservation requirements and goals.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to create a landscape design by utilizing and choosing appropriate soils, groundcovers, hardscaping, and artificial turf.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to incorporate drought-tolerant plants (xerophytes) into their designs such as cactus, trees, shrubs and perennials with a focus on native species.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to utilize net-zero water concepts and alternate sources for irrigation such as stormwater, greywater/condensate, recycled wastewater, municipal recycled water and onsite sources depending on availability, cost and level of difficulty.
