Dan Suraci
Principal – Urban Cycling SolutionsMr. Suraci is a national leader in active transportation and complete streets. His experience spans the public, private and nonprofit sectors, and includes management of high-profile projects such as the Long Island Greenway plan, and the New York Cycling Census. In addition to facilitating more than 40 complete street workshops in New York State, Mr. Suraci authored the American Public Transit Association’s National Guide to Bicycle Integration with Transit and served as the lead subject matter expert for ‘Extending Transit’s Reach’ MTA’s first ever strategic action plan for bicycles, pedestrians and micromobility. Currently he is a key team member on the development of NYSDOT’s Statewide Active Transportation Plan and is leading the bicycle and pedestrian element of NYMTC’s 2055 Long Range Transportation Plan, as well as a systemwide active transportation inventory for the State University of New York (SUNY). Outside of work, Mr. Suraci is a passionate cyclist biking as his primary mode of transportation.

Course Title: Urban Bikeway Design and Construction

Course Description: This six-hour course teaches design professionals how to approach, plan, execute, and analyze pedestrian and bicycle transportation design and safety data. The course focuses on the purposes, design, development, application, and implementation of urban bikeways. It also focuses on the principles of cyclist signaling, roadway marking, and other bicycle functions to accommodate various bicycle types and ability differences.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the purposes and principles of urban bikeway design and discuss code compliance and standards.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify cycle tracks, bicycle boulevards, intersections, and multi-use trails and assess the data related to their usage and safety.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to explore the importance of roadway marking for bicycles as well as bike signaling and the usage, statistics, and safety data involved with each.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explain manners in which to design for multiple abilities, uses and different bicycle types, taking into account the range of rider age and ability.
