Webinar Instructions

Each webinar session earns continuing education credit and can be registered for individually. All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion will be provided for each webinar attended and will be sent via email in PDF form about five business days after the conclusion of the series.

Webinars are presented via GoToWebinar, an easy-to-use application that can be run on most systems and tablets. Instructions and login information will be provided in an email sent close to the date of the webinar. It is highly recommended that you download, install and test the application before the webinar begins by clicking on the link in the email.

Continuing Education Credit Information
This seminar is open to the public and offers 7.5 PDHs to professional engineers and 7.5 HSW continuing education hours to architects in all states.

In-person attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the seminar for most individuals who complete the entire event. Attendance certificates not available at the seminar will be mailed to participants within fifteen business days.

Completion certificates will be awarded to participants who complete this event online, respond to prompts, and earn a passing score (80%) on the quiz that follows the presentation (multiple attempts allowed).

James D'Aloisio P.E. SECB LEED AP

Principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt in Syracuse

Mr. D’Aloisio is a principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt, a structural engineering, landscape architecture, and building envelope services firm in East Syracuse, New York. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Mr. D’Aloisio is a registered professional engineer in New York and Massachusetts, and he has been certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board (SECB) since its inception in 2007. He is a member and past president (1997-1998) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Syracuse Section, and a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York State (SEAoNY). Mr. D’Aloisio is a member of ASCE/SEI’s Frost-Protected Shallow Foundations Committee, the Structural Condition Assessment of Existing Buildings Committee, and the Sustainability Committee. Mr. D’Aloisio received the Order of the Engineer at Syracuse University in 1997. His 30-plus years’ experience as a consulting structural engineer has primarily involved the design of new building structures, additions, and modifications, and analyses, assessments, and investigations of structures and facades. Mr. D’Aloisio has performed structural condition reviews of over 15 million square feet of buildings and has performed over 150 structural forensic investigations. He has presented over 300 times.

Course Title: Structural Condition Reviews and Structural Failures in New York

Course Description: This course on structural condition reviews examines the process by which structures are evaluated for safety concerns and potential failures. Topics include industry guidelines and standard practices that promote building safety, types of reviews and special considerations for various levels of reviews, discussion of illustrative failures and various review scenarios, and the design professional’s professional responsibility in the review process.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify and reference industry guidelines and standard practices – such as building codes, code enforcement, special inspections, service life specifications, and condition reviews – that are designed to promote building safety.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify and define the types and levels of reviews, and explain how to document their findings in the structural condition review report.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to consider a variety of factors when performing structural condition reviews, including observations of physical condition, environmental exposure, load paths, design and/or construction quality confidence, potential for concealed defects, and the role of the design professionals intuition.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss and reference case studies of both infamous and lesser-known failures, and apply what they have learned to various real-world review scenarios.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to handle special considerations in structural condition reviews of abandoned buildings, parking garages, residential buildings and adjacent structures.
