Andrew Der

Executive Principal of Andrew T. Der & Associates, LLC

As a regionally-recognized water resources practitioner and leader for 32 years, Mr. Der provides regulatory and scientific expertise for public and private sector clients, with a commitment to equitable and sustainable solutions to complex projects while specializing in creative linkages between ecology and engineering. Mr. Der has been in private consulting practice since 2001, first as an associate and director of Environmental Services for two civil engineering firms, then, since 2013, principal of his own consulting firm, Andrew T. Der & Associates, LLC. He previously completed 17 years of service with the Maryland Department of the Environment as a manager successfully leading major new initiatives to regulate and restore Chesapeake Bay water resources. His specialties include water resource permitting, compliance, assessment, Clean Water Act, wetland and waterway compliance, NPDES, TMDL, and stormwater management. Mr. Der is an appointed industry representative of the U. S. EPA. He is a member of the Chesapeake Bay Program Executive Council Citizens Advisory Committee, Maryland Patuxent River Commission, and Montgomery County, Maryland Executive’s Water Quality Advisory Commission.

Suzanne Hoehne

Senior Ecological Designer
Suzanne Hoehne has 20 years of experience in the hydrology, ecology, geomorphology, and hydraulics of a variety of natural systems including mountainous streams, glaciated watersheds, wetlands, prairie streams, and natural fens. She has worked on several water resources related projects, such as watershed-wide strategic plans, stream restoration involving natural channel design, stormwater best management practices, and hydrologic and hydraulic studies using models such as TR-55, WSPRO, HEC-2, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, Hydrocool, and HY-8. Her involvement in these projects has ranged from initial client interaction to final construction supervision, and includes the preparation of reports, permit applications, detailed cost estimates, and contractual documents. Ms. Hoehne has field expertise in assessing streams and watersheds for geomorphic condition, riparian habitat, water quality, and land use patterns. She is skilled in the use of GIS, database management systems, and computer aided drafting programs. Before joining Biohabitats, Ms. Hoehne designed stream restoration projects for a consulting fi rm and, previously, preliminary bridge structures for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. As a graduate student, she researched the effects of groundwater levels and nutrient concentration on reed canary grass and the effects of nutrient concentration on cattail migration.

Sarah T. Koser BCES. CERP. PWS

Program Manager for Restoration at the Chesapeake Bay Trust
Sarah T. Koser leads several large restoration grant programs for the Chesapeake Bay Trust, including the Anne Arundel County Watershed Restoration program and the Maryland Department of the Environment Nontidal Wetlands program as well as the US EPA Goal Implementation Team (GIT) Funding Program.  These award programs support restoration and engagement goals for the Chesapeake Bay, state(s), and municipalities. Before joining the Trust, she was a Senior Scientist for EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC, where she worked for nearly 20 years. Specific work-related experience at EA included habitat restoration, wetland delineation and function assessment, report writing of wetland field activities and wetland impacts, conducting submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) surveys, and conducting stream assessments for potential restoration. Other experience included conducting rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) plant species surveys; habitat and vegetation identification and mapping; and plant identification to species level.  Ms. Koser holds a MS in Environmental Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Biology/Botany from Pennsylvania State University.  She is a Board-Certified Environmental Scientist (BCES), through the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists, a Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) , through the Society for Wetland Scientists, and is a Certified Ecological Restoration Professional (CERP), through the Society for Ecological Restoration.  Ms. Koser enjoys attending the Natural History Society of Maryland’s Lepidoptera Club and volunteering at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary to monitor the vernal pools each spring.

Dr. Gregory H. Nail, PhD. PE

Associate Professor, University of Tennessee at Martin

Dr. Nail is an associate professor in the Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee at Martin where he teaches a variety of courses including fluid mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology, and hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. He holds a professional engineer’s license based on having passed both the Civil and Mechanical discipline-specific exams. Prior to coming to UT-Martin in 2002 he worked as a research hydraulic engineer for the United States Army Corp of Engineers for 11 years. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Tennessee American Water Resources Association, and he has lectured on various HEC-RAS modeling topics at the Annual Tennessee Water Resources Symposium and at other venues. Dr. Nail earned his B.M.E. degree from Auburn University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University.

Nancy Schumm, PWS, CPESC, CPMSM, QPFSD, CESSWI

Director of the environmental department at PRIME AE Group, Inc. in Baltimore.

Ms. Schumm is the award-winning author of two books on natural areas and plant history and four books on history. She has been lecturing and presenting professional papers on environmental topics nationally and internationally since 1997. Nancy is the Environmental Services Division Chief for the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland and  has over 24 years  of experience in wetland permitting, regulatory permits, erosion and sediment control inspections and stormwater design.  She is Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic IECA, on the board of the International Erosion Control Association, a technical advisor for Envirocert-International and the Vice-Chair of the Wetland Workgroup for the Chesapeake Bay Program.

Adam Spiller

Regional Practice Leader for Natural Resources at KCI Technologies
Adam Spiller has been at KCI for over 18 years and has a Biology and Environmental Science degree from the College of William and Mary and a master’s in Environmental Management from Duke University. Mr. Spiller’s work at KCI has covered all aspects of stream and wetland restoration, dam removal, stream assessment, and other natural resource projects. He specializes in mitigation banking, stream relocations for transportation projects, design-build of large stream bank repair projects, MS4 and TMDL permit support, and QA/QC of design plans.

Course Title: Stream Restoration in the Eastern U.S.

Course Description: This 7-hour course aims to assist design professionals in understanding, maintaining and restoring streams. The course will begin with a discussion of surface water behavior and the causes of stream degradation before analyzing mitigation strategies along the east coast and current trends. Design, construction, and common approaches of stream restoration projects are a main focus of this course, which concludes with an analysis of federal laws and regulations.

Learners will be able to understand the causes of stream degradation, the human impacts, hydraulics and hydrology modeling methods, and flow measurement.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss the design and construction of stream restoration projects and review strategies to minimize impacts to forest resources.
