Joseph Diekfuss, PhD, PE
Civil Engineer in Wisconsin with 15 Years of Experience Working in Civil InfrastructureDr. Joseph Diekfuss is a civil engineer with 15 years of experience working in civil infrastructure. His experience as a researcher, teacher, consulting engineer and project manager spans several civil engineering disciplines, in both public and private sectors. He has coordinated and overseen construction of public roadway, sewer and watermain. He has designed single and multi-span bridges, single and multi-story buildings, and many different types of earth retention systems. Dr. Diekfuss has intimate knowledge and experience with building and environmental design codes as well as State and local regulations. Dr. Diekfuss earned his BS from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, his MS and PhD from Marquette University – all in Civil Engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Wisconsin, a National Highway Institute Certified Bridge Inspector and first-named inventor on two United States patents in civil engineering.
Satoshi Ishii
Associate Professor in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate and the BioTechnology Institute at the University of MinnesotaDr. Ishii is an Associate Professor in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate as well as the BioTechnology Institute at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on water quality and public health microbiology. The goal of his research is to solve key environmental problems, specifically (1) nutrient pollution and (2) the occurrences of pathogens. Dr. Ishii received his B.S. degree from the University of Tokyo, his M.S. degree from Iowa State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Prior to his current position, Dr. Ishii was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Hokkaido University, Japan. He is the recipient of the 3M Nontenured Faculty Award, 2018, and the Young Investigator Award, Japanese Society for Microbial Ecology, 2015.
Heiko L. Schoenfuss
Professor, St. Cloud State University, MinnesotaDr. Heiko L. Schoenfuss is an evolutionary morphologist who specializes in aquatic toxicology using fish as indicator organisms. Combining field-based and laboratory studies, he integrates multiple levels of biological organization into environmentally relevant data matrices. His studies have focused on contaminants of emerging concern, including endocrine disrupting chemicals. Additionally, he has maintained a long-term research focus on the endemic stream fauna of Hawai’i to chronicle long term evolutionary and short term anthropogenic change in these unique watersheds.
Dr. Schoenfuss received his B.S. in biology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany in 1991, a M.S. in Veterinary Anatomy from Louisiana State University, and Ph.D. in Evolutionary Morphology from the same institution in 1997. After 20 years as a professor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, he joined SCCWRP as a visiting scientist in 2020.
Dr. Stephen J. Souza, Ph.D.
Owner of Clean Waters Consulting, LLC in New JerseyDr. Souza is the founding partner of Princeton Hydro, LLC. From its inception in 1998 through 2018, he served as president of Princeton Hydro, retiring from the company in 2019. Over the past 35 years he has dedicated his career to the management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, in particular lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Dr. Souza received his B.S. degree in 1974 from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, his M.S. in 1976 from Rutgers University, and his Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of Connecticut. He has served over the past 25 years as an instructor and course coordinator for the Rutgers NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education, developing and implementing multiple short courses focused on the management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Souza is also an adjunct professor at Temple University (Ambler Campus), teaching a graduate studies course in the Department of Landscape and Horticulture (Tyler School of Art and Agriculture). He also conducts a professional continuing education course focusing on green infrastructure stormwater management for CPES through Montclair State University.

Course Description: This course focuses on stormwater management design and maintenance with an emphasis on the underlying science of stormwater and the pollutants which may contaminate it. The course discusses and applies the science of stormwater, examines stormwater as a conveyor of pollutants, analyzes bioretention design and performance, provides guidance on the implementation of green/gray and green infrastructure management solutions in urban areas, and concludes with a discussion on automated systems and maximizing the efficiency of storm water infrastructure.
