Course Title: Shallow Foundation Design, Construction and Repair

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course delves into evaluating building sites for constructing shallow foundations, referencing and complying with California Building Code provisions on shallow foundations, shallow foundation design using spread footings and mat foundations, allowable settlement, shallow foundation construction, special considerations in foundation design, and diagnosing and repairing foundation problems.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the purpose and process of evaluating potential building sites for the construction of a shallow foundation.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to reference and discuss compliance standards for California Building Code provisions on shallow foundations and best practices specific to California.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe how to design shallow foundation design using spread footings and using mat foundations, and learners will be able to determine the foundation bearing capacity and consolidation and its effects of load types and soil types.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe the shallow foundation construction processes of grading and soil improvement, dewatering and drainage, and excavation and underpinning.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to explain design and construction considerations for stratified soils, expansive soils, reinforced soils, and foundations on slopes. Learners will able be able to respond to foundation problems with appropriate diagnosing and repair techniques.
