Course Title: Seismic Ground Motions for Seismic Design
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: This seven-hour course provides an in-depth analysis of seismic ground motions and their effects on structures for design professionals, starting with an introduction into earthquake actions, related ground motions, and structural responses, providing the techniques of resilient design to withstand seismic events and keep occupants safe. The course frequently references the ASCE 7-22 and ASCE 41-17 standards while exploring ground motion hazard evaluations and general procedures, site-specific ground motion procedures, ground motions for nonlinear analysis, seismically isolated structures, and structures with damping systems, and performance objectives and target building performance levels.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the ground motions caused by earthquake actions and structural responses in single-degree and multi-degree of freedom systems.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to evaluate ground motion hazards and perform probabilistic and deterministic analyses to determine the risk and susceptibility of a structure and what should be done about it.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to understand the benefits and resiliency of seismically isolated structures and structures with damping systems by analyzing the effects ground motion has on them.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to perform a nonlinear analysis and apply ground motions to structural models to understand and predict the seismic effect.
LUs: 7.0 LU Type: LU|HSWs.
Prerequisites: Experience in structural design
Advance Preparation: None
Program Level: Intermediate
Course Expiration Date: 04/07/2025
