This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Dr. Erin Cortus
Associate Professor and Extension Engineer Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering University of MinnesotaMs. Cortus joined the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota in August 2017. Her position as Associate Professor and Extension Engineer is to provide engineering expertise in the area of sustainable animal agriculture systems. Ms. Cortus was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering degree and PhD at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Cortus also has eight years of experience in a similar Research and Extension role at South Dakota State University. Her past and ongoing projects include measuring the air quality impacts of different manure management practices in swine, poultry, dairy and beef cattle barns, investigating additional microenvironment control for grow-finish pigs and cattle, and communication of sustainability metrics within and beyond the livestock industries. The broad mission of Dr. Cortus’ program is to work with producers and communities to understand and continually improve the quality and productivity of livestock environments. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Minnesota and South Dakota.

Course Description: This three-hour course explains the challenges of managing organic waste from confined animal feeding operations, why they must be addressed and how to mitigate environmental impacts. The course identifies applicable regulations, analyzes storage facility designs, and discusses the environmental impact and threats arising from concentrated organic waste.

Learners will be able to discuss the specific challenges related to managing organic waste produced by confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and identify pollutant discharges that impact air and water quality.

Learners will be able to reference and comply with applicable regulations from the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and explore regulation protecting air quality.

Learners will be able to analyze manure storage types and design elements based on calculated manure generation rates and specific manure characteristics.
