Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar offers 6.5 PDHs to professional engineers in most states and 7.0 continuing education hours to architects  licensed in all states that accept non-HSW coursework.

Sara Abbott McEown

Ms. McEown’s practice focuses on the transactional and dispute resolution aspects of construction law. She works with clients in all phases of the construction process with an emphasis on contract drafting and negotiation, dispute avoidance during construction, field management and administration, project close- out and dispute resolution. When litigation is unavoidable, Ms. McEown has over a decade of experience trying construction cases to verdict and through appeal, as well as resolving real estate and commercial business disputes. Her legal acumen is complemented by her field experience with a large commercial general contractor prior to law school. This distinctive combination allows her insight into the nuts and bolts of issues that arise before, during and after a project, and the intrinsic capability to support the project community – including general contractors, subcontractors, owners, developers and sureties – in all aspects of construction and development.

W. Matthew Bryant

W. Matthew Bryant focuses his practice on construction law. He writes and negotiates construction contracts for private and public projects, representing participants including owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, and subcontractors. Mr. Bryant resolves construction project performance and payment disputes, including surety bond claims and mechanics lien claims. He also represents owners and contractors in litigation matters including defense and prosecution of breach of contract, warranty, and construction defect claims. Mr. Bryant has defended design professionals against claims of professional negligence. He has written and spoken on many construction-related topics, including contract negotiation, public construction, and licensure of construction professionals. David L. Fine

Mr. Fine represents and counsels clients in the construction industry, including owners and developers, general contractors and construction managers, specialty trade contractors, suppliers and manufacturers. He represents clients in adverse proceedings such as litigation and arbitration, and he consults regarding risk management, contract preparation and negotiation, and general business advice. Mr. Fine is the chair of his firm’s Construction Law Group and the president of the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Central Massachusetts. He holds several leadership positions in local, regional and national construction trade and bar organizations. Mr. Fine was named a Massachusetts “Super Lawyer” by Boston Magazine and Law & Politics in 2017 and 2018, and he was named a Massachusetts “Rising Star” for several years prior.

Stanley A. Martin

Course Description: This course examines the purpose and function of the AIA Document A201, including the relationship of the and responsibilities of the parties to the contract/project and the HSW of the owners, occupants, and general public.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify who is authorized to do work on construction sites, and will be able to describe the rights and responsibilities of participants, enabling them to work more cooperatively with contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and other design professionals.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe the process for modifying the scope of work on a project, and will be able to execute and respond to change orders, reducing confusion and conflicts and facilitating the timely completion of ordered work.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to use the procedures in the General Conditions document to uncover construction defects and substandard work, and will be able to facilitate the correction of unsatisfactory work.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to put safety precautions into place to protect the safety of persons and property during the construction process.
