Certified Building Official CEO of Code Educational OpportunitiesMr. Karow is the CEO of Code Educational Opportunities providing education based on current building codes. He also provides service as a building code specialist for design professionals and stakeholders in the industry. Mr. Karow has an extensive background in developing and presenting various types of building code and related seminars. Previous career paths included staff instructor with the International Code Council and with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division. He has instructed in a Building Inspection Technology program at a local community college. Mr. Karow is a certified building official in Minnesota and holds ICC certifications as a Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Code Specialist.

Course Description: This course examines International Building Code Chapters 5 and 6, provisions for building classifications, occupancy, and mixed occupancies. Topics include occupancy classification, allowable heights and areas, and mixed occupancy provisions.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify types of construction as defined by IBC chapter 6, and connect those types of construction as they relate to mixed occupancies.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe the IBC chapter 5 general area provisions, and define the provisions for building area, building height, grade plane and mezzanines.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to reference and comply with IBC chapter 5 provisions for allowable heights and areas, including increases for sprinklers and frontage.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to reference and comply with IBC chapter 5 mixed occupancy provisions for separated, non-separated and accessory dwellings.
