what constitutes proper specification
Learn the recommendations of a manufacturer for proper installation and inspection
of engineered lumber floor systems
Use manufacturer provided literature to find proper details to be used in the inspection of
and installation of engineered lumber floor systems
Identify bad installation through inspection and how to remedy issues

in the engineered lumber products industry

Section 4 – Fire Resistive and Fire Rated Assemblies with Wood (EWP 004)
Learn the difference between fire-resistive and fire-rated assemblies;
addressing and detailing for fire as it relates to building systems
Learn the facts about engineered wood products and their fire performance
Exception methods to comply with Section R501.3 of the 2012 IRC;
enable an understanding to apply the appropriate methods and materials discussed
Fire-rated assemblies with engineered wood products; design to meet this section of the building code

Section 5 – Introduction to Multi-Family Construction using EWP (EWP 009)
Develop an understanding of the types of construction classifications and load types
Understand the common building configuration types
Learn some of the typical construction details regarding this type of construction
Look into the tools available by most manufacturers when designing multi-family structures

Mr. Lyons has 15 years’ experience in the building materials industry, including roofing, insulation, granite, dimensional lumber and engineered wood products. He is currently the multi-family/light commercial manager responsible for educating and driving specification for Boise Cascade engineered wood products within that segment.

Course Title: Engineered Lumber Design and Construction

Course Description: This seven-hour course examines the importance of following manufacturer specifications when assembling and constructing using engineered wood products, including those for flooring systems, roof systems, fire protection, framing, and multi-family construction. The course will also look at code compliance provisions found in the International Residential Code and the International Building Code.

Learners will be able to comply with engineered wood product manufacturer specifications and building codes for the proper material selection and assembly of engineered wood flooring systems.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to comply with engineered wood product manufacturer specifications and building codes for the proper sizing and selection of engineered I-Joists, beams and columns.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to differentiate fire-resistive and fire-resistance-rated assemblies as it relates to the use of engineered wood products in building systems.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify the types of construction classifications under the building code and comply with manufacturer specifications and code requirements when designing and constructing with engineered wood products.
