Course Title:  Deep Dive into Wetland Mitigation Banking

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description:  In order to satisfy the requirements of the Clean Water Act, developers, designers and builders must limit development on federally protected wetlands. One way to preserve the net amount of wetlands in an area while still allowing development is to use wetland mitigation banking. This allows development of some wetlands while simultaneously making a commitment to preserve or restore other wetland areas. The preserved and restored wetlands provide flood storage, erosion control, and wildlife habitat, while improving water quality.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to define their responsibility to comply with Section 404 of the federal Clean Water Act, which regulates discharges of dredged or fill material into the Waters of the United States, including many wetland areas.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to explore the process of wetland mitigation banking which allows designers and builders to preserve and restore wetlands in order to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify the components of mitigation banks that allow them to participate in wetland preservation and restoration projects.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify projects within mitigation banks that meet the environmental needs associated with the learner’s own projects.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to implement the lessons learned from wetland mitigation case studies to use mitigation banking to preserve and restore wetlands as part of their own development and building projects.

LUs: 2.0                                                                                              LU Type: LU|HSWs.

Prerequisites: Learners should have a background knowledge in the land development and building design and construction processes to understand the environmental changes development brings to undeveloped lands.
