Course Title: Current Issues in Interior Design

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course examines the new AIA B152-2019 and how it differs from the B152-2007, including the 2019 distinctions between architectural interior design and FF&E design. The course explores the evolution of sustainable design, interior design issues for historical preservation projects, biophilic design principles, and ethical standards for designers.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify the changes to the AIA B152-2007 agreement that resulted in the B152-2019 agreement. Without careful examination, understanding and use of this revised document, project participants may not be able to distinguish between architectural interior design and FF&E, and may not be able to identify best practices for working on interior spaces.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe what determines the sustainability of building materials and building methodologies, and they will be able to explain how sustainable design projects can protect the environment and promote health and wellness for building users.

Learning Objective 3:
Preservation is important for present and future generations to appreciate the quality and the workmanship that went into creating particular structures and to consider the values of past generations who financed and constructed them. Learners will be able to discuss types of historic building preservation, including restoration and adaptive reuse. They will be able to identify tax credits, grants and other financing options to take on historic preservation options. They will be able to resolve zoning issues, comply with building codes and accessibility standards, and incorporate sustainable design features.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explain the concept and practices of biophilic design, which aims to connect the built environment and the natural environment for building users through the inclusion of natural elements and the simulation of natural shapes, forms, patterns, and light. Learners will be able to discuss how these design principles can influence occupant sense of connection to nature and increase emotional well-being.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to abide to ethical standards that prioritize their obligations to the public and to their duties to individual clients.
