This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers, 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Trails & Vistas Administrator for Tennessee State ParksBorn and raised in Tennessee, Mr. Meister has worked as a professional trail builder, naturalist, and land manager since 2013. He is currently the Trails & Vista Administrator for Tennessee State Parks where he oversees the maintenance and management of a 1,400-mile trail system spread across 57 state parks and 84 state natural areas. In this role. Mr. Meister is also responsible for the design, construction, and project management of all new trail development. Throughout his career his goal has been to create recreational experiences for everyone, regardless of their ability level. This has led to extensive experience in accessible trail design and construction efforts that have received national awards and recognition.
Don Tate, CFI, ADAC
Facilities Construction Director | ADA Coordinator with Bureau of Parks and Conservation at Tennessee State ParksMr. Tate is a distinguished professional currently holding the position of Facilities Construction Director and ADA Coordinator for Tennessee State Parks. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and construction of public improvement projects, ensuring that all 57 state parks comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). His expertise in project management and regulatory compliance is instrumental in enhancing the accessibility and safety of public facilities. With a degree in Business Administration from the University of the People, Mr. Tate has cultivated a diverse career spanning healthcare, wildland fire, and forest/resource management. His dedication to safety and compliance is underscored by his certifications as a certified ADA coordinator, a Tennessee certified fire inspector, NFPA fire inspector, and a life safety inspector certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Residing in Paris, TN, Mr. Tate is committed to serving his community and making a positive impact on public facilities and services.

Course Title: Accessible Trail Design, Construction, and Operation

Course Description: This course explores accessible trail design to accommodate users with a wide range of disabilities. The course begins by providing a foundational understanding of accessibility issues and regulations, including the ADA Standards for Accessible Design and PROWAG. Then the course provides strategies to accommodate users with different disabilities, discusses trail design guidelines and considerations, and provides guidance on the planning and construction of accessible trails.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify proper accommodations and trail design for users with mobility impairments, sensory impairments and cognitive impairments.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to adopt accessible trail design guidelines, including grade, width, slope, vertical clearance, changes in levels, grates, obstacles and protrusions.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to incorporate other accessible trail design considerations such as ramps, crossings, amenities, signage, warnings, drainage and stormwater management.
Learning Objective 4:
Learner will be able to plan and construct accessible trails by identifying needs, engaging stakeholders and the public, and determining incentives. Case studies of completed and in-progress projects will be discussed.
