This seminar and concurrent webcast are open to the public and are designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers, 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in Texas.
The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.5 HSW LUs (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the AIA/CES.
The Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.5 HSW PDHs. Only full participation is reportable to the LA CES.

Speakers
George Lueck, P.E.
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)Mr. Lueck, P.E., has 17 years of experience with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). He started his career performing design and surveying for a variety of roadway projects ranging from farm-to-market roads to urban roadways and high design speed facilities in the Waco district. Mr. Lueck later transferred to the construction division, where he provided oversight to statewide districts in the areas of construction project management, construction engineering, inspection, and contract claims. After serving in this capacity for over nine years, he transferred to the transportation planning division. As Assistant Director of Traffic Analysis, he oversaw transportation data collection
and reporting, corridor-level plans, and travel demand modeling. Mr. Lueck then served the City of Killeen for 11 years as Assistant City Engineer and Director of Transportation. He had oversight of all operations of the city’s transportation system. Mr. Lueck also ensured that the city’s transportation system was planned, constructed, and maintained in a cost-effective manner to effectively address the
region’s growing safety, mobility, and reliability needs. For the last nine years, Mr. Lueck has been self-employed as an independent consultant providing services to local governments and civil engineering firms in a variety of services ranging from proposal development/review, transportation plans, dispute resolution and plan review, to street and traffic operations analysis.

Course Title: Transportation Planning and Highway Route Studies

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course teaches design professionals how to approach, plan, execute, and analyze transportation planning and highway routes. The course focuses on topics within transportation planning ranging from non-automobile considerations, thoroughfare development, capital improvement plans, the use of transportation financing tools, and alternate routes. Participants will also explore highway corridor studies that address mobility and access needs, intelligent transportation systems, air quality considerations, and will conclude with a discussion on best practices and a class exercise.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify non-automobile considerations including a variety of topics such as hike and bicycle planning, multi-modal planning, and safe routes to school.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to explore thoroughfare development including functional street classification, creation and implementation of metropolitan transportation plans, as well as overall comprehensive improvement plans.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify opportunities to create alternative routes for use in the event of a traffic accident or natural disaster.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss intelligent transportation systems and air quality considerations, including that of improvement in travel time, reduction of stops, congestion mitigation, and air quality and emissions.
