Course Title: Slope Stabilization and Landslide Prevention in the Great Lakes Region
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: This 6.5-hour course is intended to assist design professionals in identifying types of slopes and failures, understanding soil mechanics, evaluating slope stability, utilizing appropriate stabilization methods, and reviewing case studies in the Great Lakes region.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify types of slopes (natural, engineered) and failures (creep, topple, rotational, compound, etc.).
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to evaluate slope stability by considering geology, site conditions/topography, and surface and ground water conditions, and by understanding the proper instrumentation and computer programs.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to utilize various slope stabilization methods, including unloading, buttressing, drainage, reinforcing, geosynthetics, shoreline management and use of vegetation.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss soil mechanics and properties such as soil effective pressure, soil shear strength, and drained vs undrained strength.
LUs: 6.5 LU Type: LU|HSWs.
Prerequisites: Familiarity with site design and slope analysis
