This seminar is approved by the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System for 7.0 LU|HSW (Sponsor No. J885) and the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System for 7.0 HSW PDHs. Course Description: This 7.0 hour live lecture presentation covers soil mechanics and classification, slope stability analysis, reinforced slope stability analysis, and earth structure failures and fixes. The lecture also covers site layout and slope instability prevention.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the importance of recognizing soil properties and the need to having soils investigated before undertaking site development, particularly on sloped terrain.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss fundamental soil characteristics and slope instability, explain strategies to improve or restore stability with construction practices, use of vegetation, and engineered slopes.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify types of slopes and distinguish types of instability, and discuss reinforced slope stability calculations, geosynthetic materials and alternatives used to achieve stability .
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify methods to prevent slope failures, recognize potential problems in the field, and identify potential causes of problems or failures.
