Introduction to CHP Systems
CHP prime movers and components for each prime mover including applied example applications to heating and cooling systems as well as electrical connection equipment and issues. Includes how to select CHP technology for applied applications – ranges from internal combustion systems to micro turbines and large scale turbines. Thermodynamics refresher.
CHP Applied
Process for evaluating cost payback and system pros/cons based on facility condition and existing infrastructure. High-level applied examples of conducting a CHP study. Applications samples include:
• Apartment or assisted living complex
• K12 school (with swimming pool)
• YMCA or other health club
• Dairy
• Hospital campus
• Small university (student population ~2,000)
• Large university (student population ~15,000)

Continuing Education Credit Information
This seminar is open to the public. It offers 6.5 PDHs to professional engineers and 6.5 HSW contact hours to architects in all states. Continuing education for professional engineers is not mandatory for license renewal in Washington. This course also offers a non-credit continuing education opportunity to facility managers.
This program is approved by the American Institute of Architects for 6.5 HSW Learning Units (Sponsor No. J885).

WSU Energy ProgramMs. Karr worked with the Northwest Combined Heat and Power Technical Advisory Panel to develop training and tools for assessment of the viability for installing combined heat and power at commercial and industrial facilities. Assessments include determination of right sizing, selecting the best technology, mechanical and electrical interface, permitting and associated regulations. This is done with the goal of providing customers with a technology that will save them money, improve power and thermal reliability, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Gilbert McCoy, WSU Energy Program
WSU Energy ProgramMr. McCoy, a registered professional engineer, is a senior energy systems engineer with the WSU Energy Program. He provides technical assistance and energy auditing services to industrial and public-sector clients. Mr. McCoy’s areas of expertise include optimization of industrial systems (motor/drive, compressed air, steam, combined heat and power and pumping). He served as lead engineer for development of software products including MotorMaster+ (motor energy management), International Motor Selection and Savings Analysis, AirMaster+ (compressed air system assessment) and BallastMaster (lighting system/ballast selection) software. Mr. McCoy is a U.S. DOE Qualified AIRMaster+ Specialist and a Qualified Steam Tools and Process Heating Specialist. He holds a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Washington and an M.S. degree in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
