How to Obtain, Interpret, and Change a FEMA Flood Map
Description
Nobody should be required to pay for something they don’t need. Somewhere in your community, a homeowner is paying for flood insurance every year because a flood map put their house in a flood zone it may not belong in. Flood maps have their limits, and when one gets a property wrong, the owner usually can’t fix it alone.
If you’re a surveyor, engineer or landscape architect, you may be the person who can. That’s why we built this training: to help you read a flood map with confidence, work from the right numbers, and guide owners through getting a map changed when it has them wrong. It’s a service your clients will need, and one you’ll be ready to offer.
You’ll leave knowing how to:
- Read a flood map and understand what each flood zone requires
- Find the information you need in the flood insurance study behind the map
- Get current maps and data from FEMA
- Understand how lenders make flood determinations, and how an owner can dispute one
- Choose the right Letter of Map Change and know who does what to get it approved
Learn these skills and more from Bill Nechamen, CFM. Mr. Nechamen was the floodplain coordinator for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for 21 years. He is a former chair of the Association of State Floodplain Managers, a recipient of its Meritorious Lifetime Achievement in Floodplain Management Award, and a founder and the first chair of the New York State Floodplain and Stormwater Managers Association.
Help your clients build in the right place and get them out of the flood zone when the map has it wrong.
