Description

For many people with disabilities, the parking space is where the building starts. If the space, the aisle, or the route to the door isn’t accessible, it doesn’t matter how accessible the rest of the building is.

Accessible parking might look simple on a site plan. Count the spaces, stripe the aisles, and put up the signs. But it is more complicated than it may seem; the count depends on the type of building, where the spaces go depends on the entrances they serve, and the stalls, aisles, slopes, clearances, and signs each carry their own requirements.

As a designer, you’re the one who lays it out. That’s why we built this training: to help you get accessible parking right the first time. Meeting the building code and meeting the ADA aren’t always the same thing, and knowing the difference helps the people who depend on these spaces while protecting your clients.

You’ll leave knowing how to:

  • Sort out which accessibility standards apply to a parking project, and design to the most restrictive
  • Calculate the accessible and van accessible spaces each facility needs
  • Lay out stalls, access aisles, signage and accessible routes, in lots and garages alike
  • Recognize when work on an existing facility counts as an alteration, and what it can trigger
  • Apply PROWAG standards to on-street parking

Learn from Rob McConnell, PE, SE, LEED Green Associate, Vice President at WGI Parking Solutions. He brings nearly 30 years of parking design and consulting for airports, government, military, transit, higher education, healthcare and corporate clients, and is a member of the National Parking Association’s Parking Consultants Council and a founding member of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute.

Design parking that works for everyone, and gives your clients one less thing to worry about.
