This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 4.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 4.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Supervisor/Education, Rules, Codes, and Grants Programs Minnesota Department of Labor and IndustryMr. Sivigny is a Certified Building Inspector / Building Official
Energy and building durability/ resiliency specialist Builder/Construction Manager. He has over 32 years of work experience in the enforcement of the Minnesota Building Codes in both rural and metropolitan settings. Mr. Sivigny has spent many years in the industry as a code official and a construction manager. He is known nationally for his work in residential building codes, building durability issues, building science, air quality control, radon, energy and green building issues. Mr. Sivigny has traveled the country teaching these topics and has often been a featured speaker both locally and nationally on these topics as well.

Course Title: Turning a Deck into a Porch or Enclosed Living Space

Course Description: This four-hour course focuses on the materials, design and considerations for converting decks into porches or enclosed living spaces, including screen porches, sunrooms and four-season porches. The course will identify and explain structural issues and review the use of proper materials and components.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the various design parameters for different structures, including decks, screen porches, sunrooms and four-season porches.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to consider structural issues when converting a deck into a parch or enclosed living space, such as additional loads on floors, walls and roofs.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to utilize the proper material depending on the structure’s intended use, such as decking material, guards, stairs and insulation.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to utilize and design the proper structural elements to accommodate the increased loads, including footings, braced wall panels and more.
