Speakers

Ann Audrey

Ann Audrey is an environmental consultant working in the fields of urban tree management, rainwater harvesting and sustainable design. She edited the 350-page American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA) Rainwater Harvesting Manual, which is used throughout the U.S. to train rainwater harvesting professionals. Recent projects include developing guidance on the use native and cultivated fruit and nut trees in Arizona, developing best practices to increase the use of native trees in Tucson and compiling information on climate resilient native trees for Arizona and New Mexico. Ms. Audrey also researched and developed profiles of insect and disease threats to urban trees in Arizona and New Mexico and will be expanding the number of threat species addressed in the coming year

Carianne Funicelli

Carianne Funicelli is the owner of Strategic Habitat Enhancements, a consulting firm that focuses on helping clients bring nature to their yards with strategic native plant choices. She moved to Tucson in 1998 after earning a degree in Botany specifically because she loves the native plants of the Sonoran Desert. Since then, she has become a well-known advocate for native plant conservation and restoration. She has conducted projects large and small throughout the southwest region, both in wild areas and urban landscapes. Ms. Funicelli has served as the president of the Society for Ecological Restoration, Southwest Chapter and of the Tucson Chapter of the Arizona Native Plant Society, as well as a term as the Wildlife Habitat Representative on the City of Tucson’s Landscape Advisory Committee. She has worked in the government, business, and non-profit sectors over the past 25 years.

Elise Gornish, PhD

Cooperative Extension Specialist in Ecological Restoration at the University of Arizona

Dr. Gornish received her MS and PhD degrees from Florida State University in 2013. She then completed two years as a post doc at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Gornish’s work largely focuses on vegetation management in arid systems with a focus on ecological restoration, weed management and soil management. She has published over 80 articles, given hundreds of talks and was recently selected as an ESA Early Career Fellow. In addition to vegetation management, Dr. Gornish is passionate about STEM inclusion and is also the director of GALS (Girls on outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science). GALS focuses on providing science learning and leadership opportunities to traditionally underserved female high school students through backcountry programming.

Shaun McCoshum, PhD

Pollinator, Ecologist and Conservationist with Westwood Professional Services

Dr. McCoshum has designed urban, suburban, and rural conservation projects across the United States. His research expertise includes monarch ecology, milkweeds, and native bee communities, and he has more than 15 years of experience working in the arid Southwest. Dr. McCoshum has extensive experience rearing monarchs in laboratory settings, growing milkweeds, and creating vegetation management plants, and urban conservation designs. In addition to his research and professional work, he is the author of Inviting Pollinators and Other Wildlife into Your Garden, which dives into the processes of creating robust, aesthetically pleasing, wildlife habitats.

Course Title: Southwest U.S. Native Plant Workshop: Native Plants in the Managed Landscape

Course Description: This six-hour course will instruct design professional on how to utilize and maintain native plants in the southwest United States to support wildlife, promote pollinators, and increase urban climate resilience. Additionally, the course will examine how climate change has altered habitats in the southwest, provide strategies for managing invasive plants, and discuss how to create a site-specific planting palette.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss how the effects of climate change on the southwest has altered the habitat for native plants, such as changes in precipitation, soil health, fire frequency, and loss of pollinators.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe the effects invasive plants have on native habitats, adopt methods for managing invasive plants, and explore spatial and temporal management.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to explain why native plants are valuable to the environment and identify the seven pollinator groups and their needs.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to adopt best practices for using native trees to increase urban climate resilience, such as watering trees with harvested rainwater or graywater and planting native trees and native understory plants together.
