This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers, 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Deryn Davidson
Sustainable Landscape State Specialist with Colorado State University ExtensionMs. Davidson is an experienced extension agent with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry and providing outreach and education to Coloradans. Her horticulture skills focus on native plants, water conservation, pollinator habitat, and design. She is skilled in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Environmental Awareness, Adobe Photoshop, and Submittals. Ms. Davidson is a strong research professional with a BS degree in Horticulture from Colorado State University and an MLA degree in Landscape Architecture from University of Arizona.
Sarah Gronquist
Program Director at SGLA LARE Prep and Senior Landscape Architect at Thuilot AssociatesMs. Gronquist has been a licensed landscape architect since 2004. She has been teaching landscape architecture since 2006, working with Ray Freeman’s LARE Preparatory Courses. She has served as an adjunct professor at many Bay Area institutions, including UC Berkeley, UC Extension, Merritt College, and Berkeley’s Owner Builder Center. Ms. Gronquist also developed online courses in grading and drainage for San Francisco’s Academy of Art University, with separate tracks for undergraduates and graduate students. After earning an undergraduate degree as a sculptor, she quickly became interested in applying her design skills on larger scale projects. She earned her M.L.A. degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then made her way to California. Since that time, Ms. Gronquist has worked on a wide range of design projects, including private residential gardens, creek restorations, affordable housing developments, public park settings for monumental sculptures, and commercial mixed-use permitting and master planning. She was an early adopter of Alameda County’s ReScape (formerly Bayfriendly) landscape sustainability rating program. She was a member of the first class of Bayfriendly Qualified Landscape Professionals back in 2006 and continues to volunteer and teach at ReScape events throughout California. As a lifelong learner, Ms. Gronquist is also an enthusiastic teacher. Her SGLA Technical Training website at www.sarahgronquist.com is the registration portal for LARE webinars. New on-demand courses for the California Supplemental Exam and for refreshing basic grading skills are also available there, along with many free resources for landscape professionals seeking to learn and grow.
Kent Halloran
Water Compliance Engineer, The Ohio State UniversityMr. Halloran has worked for over 30 years in the field of stormwater, potable water, wastewater engineering design and construction. He has also worked as a design and construction engineer in the areas of municipal, industrial, and airport drainage among other areas. He serves as The Ohio State University’s water compliance engineer and has served as an adjunct faculty professor in the Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering Department (https://ceg.osu.edu/). He is also the faculty advisor for two student organizations. In the past, Mr. Halloran served as the town engineer for several communities and has promoted the concepts of sustainability throughout his career. Throughout his career he has encouraged the use of natural systems, such as constructed wetlands, and the conversion of retention basins using native wetland plants to improve stormwater retention, increase pollutant removal, and provide pollinator and wetland habitat. He earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and a M.E. degree in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University. He is a licensed professional engineer in the States of Ohio and Idaho.

Course Description: This course explores various methods and design strategies to promote site sustainability. The course begins with a discussion on the relevant rules, regulations, certifications and resources before diving into greenfield development versus brownfield redevelopment, sustainable stormwater management, pollinator-friendly design, and walkability, micromobility and mass transit considerations.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to discuss relevant rules, regulations, certifications and resources such as stormwater requirements and permitting, principles of low impact development, new urbanism, Sustainable Sites Initiative, and the aesthetic, energy-efficiency and health benefits.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to define greenfields and brownfields, explain the advantages of greenfield development, and understand how to take advantage of brownfields and the existing infrastructure and connections for redevelopment and urban renewal.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to manage stormwater through stormwater harvesting and reuse, infiltrating systems and rain gardens, as well as support native pollinators through pollinator friendly design and habitat restoration/enhancement.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to explore strategies to connect the site to sustainable transportation options and discuss the environmental impact of these options, including sidewalks, trails, bike routes, e-bikes and scooters, mass transit and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
