Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Daniel Biggs

Daniel Biggs, RLA, ISA, CERP
Landscape Architect and Regional Manager for Weston & Sampson
Mr. Biggs is a senior landscape architect and regional manager for Weston & Sampson in Albany, New York. A New York registered landscape architect, certified arborist, and certified ecological restoration practitioner, he has over 16 years of experience in all phases of planning, environmental permitting, landscape architecture and ecological design. His background includes leading multi-disciplinary teams on master planning, multi-use trails, parks, and ecological restoration projects. He led multi-disciplinary teams for the planning and design of wetlands, streams, shorelines, and ponds for a reclaimed quarry site. Mr. Biggs oversaw the ecological design and arboriculture assessment of existing natural resources to address the need for vegetation/species management along the Charles River in Massachusetts. He managed the construction of a 1.5 acre wetland restoration project, and has led the effort of designing several sustainable shorelines along the Hudson River. Mr. Biggs is particularly experienced in facilitating the stakeholder participation process and is passionate about incorporating public engagement as part of a creative, collaborative approach to planning and design.

Greg Fleischer

Greg FleischerCapital Environmental Consultants, Inc.
Mr. Fleischer is the founder and principal of Capital Environmental Consultants, Inc. He is an environmental scientist and professional wetland scientist with more than 15 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry. Mr. Fleischer has conducted wetland and ecological investigations at properties throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and the Lower and Mid-Hudson Valley. His areas of expertise include all aspects of federal, state, and local wetland analysis including freshwater and tidal delineation, specializing in comprehensive determinations for routine, atypical, and problem wetlands. Mr. Fleischer has extensive experience developing solutions and providing strategic advice for a wide range of clients and projects. He holds a BS degree in Biology from SUNY New Paltz and an MS degree in Environmental Science from Pace University.

Penn Marchael

Pennington Marchael  is a Landscape contractor based in Brooklyn and Bedford Hills NY.
Throughout his career he has cultivated a deep understanding of horticulture and ecology which he uses to execute successfully vibrant landscapes. Mr. Marchael has over ten years of experience in project management, landscape construction, and maintenance. In those ten years he has installed and maintained meadows from Virginia to Northern New York with a total of over one hundred fifty acres installed and many more maintained and monitored. Previously working with Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, Eastern Land Management, JW Townsend and other firms. His present focus is growing his business, Pennington Grey, where he aspires to train a new generation of land managers that will lead the landscape industry away from traditional practices and towards a more sustainable and dynamic approach.

Michael Parkes

Michael Parkes, M.S. Principal and Chief Ecologist, Parkes Ecological LLC
Mr. Parkes is a certified ecologist who serves as the chief ecologist/owner of a consulting firm founded in 2013. The firm’s scope of services mirrors his expertise and interests: wetland and wildlife ecology, ecological design, land use regulation, and geographical information Systems (GIS). He has extensive experience working on contaminated sites. He has personally delineated over 100 wetlands in several states. These wetlands run the gamut of habitat types and regulatory scenarios. This has often led to the necessity of regulatory coordination and permitting. Parkes Ecological specializes in assisting engineers, landscape architects, and other professionals in developing compliance strategies, permits, and design documents that incorporate ecological design into the overall project design. This support is tailored to the client’s existing capabilities and needs, often extending through construction and the monitoring frequently required with ecological projects.

Course Description: This course explores the processes and ecological benefits of restoring New York open spaces to their original condition.

Learning Objectives:

Learners will be able to discuss natural land systems before development and the ecological benefits of restoring land to those previous conditions. They will be able to describe the macro and micro benefits of restoration

Learners will be able to knowingly be able to discuss the issue of restorationwith clients, and explain the necessity of setting restoration goals and project objectives.

Learners will be able to describe the methods of removing sources of disturbance, and they will be able to explain strategies for restoring ecological processes, soil and water, and vegetation.

Learners will be able to assist with implementing ecological rehabilitation plans, including compliance with permitting and regulations in New York, construction, monitoring, and troubleshooting ecological threats.
