Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Keefer Dunn

Licensed Architect and Sole Practitioner based in Chicago

Mr. Dunn is a sole practitioner an assistant professor, adjunct at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the former host of a radio show about architecture and politics called Buildings on Air. His practice is deeply rooted in his home neighborhood of Bridgeport, and emphasizes bringing new aesthetic strategies and philosophical inquiry to common construction techniques and materials. He earned his M. Arch degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, College of Architecture, in May 2015 and his B.S. degree in Architecture, from Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Architecture, in August 2012.

Marcus E. Woods, PE & LEED AP

Principal, Woods Residential Engineering and Inspection, LLC

After working in engineering and design management with award-winning structural and construction firms for nearly 10 years, Mr. Woods founded his own firm, Woods Residential Engineering & Inspection. Mr. Woods is a licensed professional engineer in multiple states, and he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering (with a focus on structures) from Washington University in St. Louis. He has earned “Accredited Professional” status from the U.S. Green Building Council. Mr. Woods is a member of: The Woods Educational Enrichment Foundation, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) (Director of Programs for the Chicago professional chapter), the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.

Course Title: Residential and Small Commercial Roof Design and Construction

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course analyzes roof design and construction for residential and small commercial structures, from framing to coverings. The course will focus on roof framing, truss options and installation, thermal performance, ventilation, moisture control and cover options that comply with the related provisions of the IBC, IRC and ASCE 7-22.

Learners will be able to explore the costs, benefits and drawbacks of common roof types such as gable, hip, mansard and flat roofs.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss the structural considerations of roof framing and analyze the design, construction, installation and connections of roof trusses.

Learners will be able to assess the thermal performance of roofs, consider appropriate insulation options, and manage moisture and ventilation.

Learners will be able to examine different types of roof covers and their costs and benefits, including shingles, steel, coatings and cool roofs.
