Certified Building Inspector / Building Official / Energy and Building Durability / Resiliency Specialist Builder / Construction Manager with Minnesota Department of Labor and IndustryMr. Sivigny has over 32 years of work experience in enforcement of the Minnesota Building Codes in both rural and metropolitan settings. He has spent many years in the industry as a code official and a construction manager. Mr. Sivigny is known nationally for his work in residential building codes, building durability issues, building science, air quality control, radon, energy and green building issues. He has traveled the country teaching these topics and has often been a featured speaker both locally and nationally on these topics as well.

Course Title: Residential Shallow Protected Foundation Systems

Course Description: This three-hour course examines frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSFs) as a cost-effective alternative to traditional deep foundations in cold climates. Instruction covers insulation and backfill methods that raise the frost line and prevent frost heave damage, along with design advantages and potential cost savings. The program also reviews applicable code requirements and best practices for using and installing FPSFs in residential construction.

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the principles of frost-protected shallow foundations and their role in mitigating frost heaves and structural damage.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify the insulation and backfill strategies used to raise the frost line and protect shallow foundations.
