Rob McConnell, PE, SE, LEED Green Associate
Vice President at WGI Parking Solutions, Charlotte, NCMr. McConnell’s parking design and consulting experience encompasses nearly 30 years of work with airports, government, military, transit, higher education, resort, healthcare, and corporate clients. He is a member of the National Parking Association’s Parking Consultants Council and a founding member of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute. He is well-versed in precast concrete, cast-in-place concrete, and steel construction. Mr. McConnell’s experience includes numerous restorations, parking study, and programming projects. Several of his projects have received LEED certification, and he is an accredited GBCI Parksmart Advisor.

Course Title: Parking Structure Design, Construction and Maintenance

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course examines the design, construction and maintenance of parking structures. Specifically, the course explores designs which maximize functionality, applicable building codes and accessibility standards, passive security, lighting, durability and expected maintenance, restoration and repair. The course dives deep into the architectural design and structural requirements of cast-in-place and precast concrete parking structures, and analyzes the function and design of key structural components.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to optimize the parking structure layout, circulation, vertical communication and drainage to maximize the functional design of parking structures.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to locate, reference and comply with applicable building codes and accessibility standards, including provisions related to fire prevention and protection, guards and vehicle barriers, and means of egress.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to identify structural requirements for parking garages, including seismic design and wind load resistance standards, and examine the difference between cast-in-place designs and precast designs.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to discuss parking structure service life expectations, including routine and proactive repair and maintenance, and the optimum timing for repairs.
