Course Title: Minnesota Wetlands Science, Law and Compliance

Course Description: This six-hour course examines federal and state (Minnesota) wetlands law and enforcement, wetland identification, permitting processes and policy, and techniques for the preservation, restoration, creation and enhancement of wetlands.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify wetlands by their vegetation and soils and understand the importance of the underlying hydrology and the role it plays in local ecosystems, flood storage, conveyance, and pollution and erosion control.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to review strategies and techniques for preserving, restoring, creating and enhancing wetlands with a preference for onsite and in-kind restorations. Methods, benefits and drawbacks of wetland creation will also be discussed.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to navigate the rules and regulations that design, construction and environmental professionals encounter when participating in the permitting, certification and appeals processes.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to utilize the Minnesota Public Waters Inventory, comply with the Federal Clean Water Act and the Wetland Conservation Act, and identify implementing/enforcing agencies
