Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 2.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 2.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Steven Halcomb, P.E., G.E.

Devise Engineering

Mr. Halcomb has over 16 years of geotechnical earthquake engineering experience in Alaska and throughout the US. He is Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Devise Engineering in Anchorage, Alaska. Mr. Halcomb regularly oversees geotechnical efforts on projects ranging from several hundred thousand to multi-million dollars in various environments including the arctic, subarctic, and marine. He has experience in shallow and deep foundation design, retaining walls, slope stability, pavements, excavations, and regularly aids during construction and performs various inspections. Mr. Halcomb has worked in ideal and adverse conditions including liquefiable and expansive soils and frozen ground requiring extensive thermal modeling. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Geo-Institute. Mr. Halcomb earned his B.S., M.C.E., M.S. in Arctic Engineering, and an Earthquake graduate certificate all from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Course Title: Lateral Earth Pressure for Seismic Design

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This two-hour course analyzes the forces and consequences of lateral earth pressures on structures and retaining walls and demonstrates how to estimate these pressures using various theories and approaches. The course will then use this information to discuss seismic displacements and considerations for design and construction.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the basic soil properties for earth pressure computations, as well as static lateral pressures from retaining walls.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to estimate static earth pressure using various methods such as Coulomb/Rankine, long-spiral, and trial wedge.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to estimate seismic active pressure using various approaches, including Mononobe-Okabe, Seed and Whitman, Mylonakis and others.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to analyze the distribution of seismic earth pressure and seismic displacements.
