Curran E. Mohney

Engineering Geology Program leader for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)

Mr. Mohney is the Engineering Geology Program leader for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The Engineering Geology Program at ODOT encompasses site characterization, subsurface exploration, slopes and embankments, geologic hazards, groundwater, geotechnical instrumentation, and planning and research activities. In this role, he also oversees the Unstable Slopes (landslide/ rockfall) Program for ODOT. He is a registered geologist and a certified engineering geologist in Oregon with over 30 years of experience in Oregon and the western states. Mr. Mohney has been the Engineering Geology Program leader since 2004. Prior to this, he had been a staff and project-level geologist for consulting firms and the mining industry as well as for ODOT. He is a graduate of the Geology Program at Portland State University. During his professional career, Mr. Mohney has been involved in the investigation, design, and construction of a wide range of challenging earthwork projects including high fills on soft ground, side slope embankments, and cut slopes in mixed-face conditions. His other work includes landslide and rockfall mitigation, ground improvement, and dewatering.

Course Title: Landscape Architecture and Landslide Mitigation

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This two-hour course explores how landscape architecture can play a critical role in preventing and mitigating landslides, particularly in regions where development interfaces with steep or unstable terrain. Emphasizing biostabilization and other nonstructural strategies, the program demonstrates how thoughtful planting design, soil management, and site planning can reduce slope failure risks while supporting long-term landscape function and resilience.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the factors contributing to slope instability and identify conditions where interventions are appropriate.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to evaluate biostabilization methods, including plant selection, soil improvement, and erosion control techniques, to reduce landslide risk.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to integrate nonstructural stabilization strategies into site plans, grading designs, and landscape layouts for hillside and steep-slope environments.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to assess landslide-prone sites and recommend mitigation approaches that balance safety, ecological function, and long-term site performance.
