Continuing Education Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 2.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 2.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Jason Altman, RA, NCARB

Licensed Architect with Shape Collective A/E, LLC, in Grand Rapids, MI

Mr. Altman is a licensed architect with extensive experience navigating the complex world of the International Building Code (IBC). Specializing in the multifamily and commercial sectors, he has earned a reputation for translating intricate regulatory requirements into practical design solutions that are effective in real-world applications. He previously worked on the internal code-training team at a mid-sized architecture firm, where he helped keep the design team informed and developed tailored curricula to simplify dense code language and apply it to daily practice. These training sessions addressed major architectural challenges, such as understanding height and area calculations, managing mixed-use separations, and ensuring life-safety through egress strategies. Although much of his work focuses on high-density residential environments, Mr. Altman’s approach to codes is universally applicable. He believes that grasping the reasons behind code provisions is crucial for architects to manage risks and safeguard their firms. As an NCARB-certified architect, he remains current with code updates and state-specific amendments. Mr. Altman looks forward to extending his practical, hands-on training style to a broader audience, helping practitioners master the 2024 IBC with emphasis on professional judgment, fairness in design, and technical precision.

Course Title:  IBC Administration: Navigating Legal Authority, Liability, and the Regulatory Framework

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This two-hour course, part of the 2024 International Building Code (IBC) series, examines IBC administration through the lens of legal authority, liability, and the regulatory framework. The course reviews the history and development cycle of the 2024 IBC, its scope and applicability, and navigating Chapter 35 standards. The course also covers permit and construction document requirements, roles and duties of the Building Official, professional liability and appeals, and project closeout issues including temporary structures and Certificates of Occupancy.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to discuss the history and development cycle of the 2024 IBC as it relates to administrative and regulatory frameworks.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify permitting, construction document, and submittal requirements.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to explain the roles and duties of the Building Official, including the Right of Entry.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to analyze how professional liability, the appeals process, and handling violations function to support code compliance and enforcement.
