Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

James Bantis, Ph.D., M.S.
Assistant Professor of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at University of Hawai'i at ManoaDr. Bantis is in his first year as an Assistant Professor in Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He specializes in structural engineering, earthquake engineering, seismic hazard and risk analysis, performance-based design, seismology, and regional seismic risk analyses. Dr. Bantis has published research in leading seismology and earthquake engineering journals and has presented his research at many conferences over the last five years. He teaches undergraduate and graduate structural engineering courses as well as a new course on seismic hazard and performance-based earthquake engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Prior to joining the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr. Bantis obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. at Stanford University in structural engineering where he also worked as a graduate research assistant, lecturer, and teaching assistant. Prior to studying and working at Stanford University, he obtained his B.E. in Civil Engineering at The Cooper Union. Dr. Bantis also has three years of industry experience working as a site/civil, structural, and geotechnical engineer at Lagan Engineering and Environmental Services and Skanska in New York City. He is a member of EERI, ASCE, and SEAONC.

Course Title: Hawaii Seismic Design and Construction

Course Description: This seven-hour course examines earthquake actions and the structural dynamics and response of buildings. The course discusses the modern philosophy of performance-based earthquake engineering, seismic hazard analysis, and ASCE 7 seismic design provisions.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to describe earthquake characteristics, ground motion, and earthquake ground motion measures.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to perform seismic hazard analysis using earthquake magnitude and frequency models, source modeling, uniform hazard spectra, and ASCE 7 design spectra.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to examine structural dynamics and apply seismic analysis methods for SDOF and MDOF structures, including equivalent lateral force and modal procedures.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to evaluate performance-based earthquake engineering methods for seismic demand prediction, collapse assessment, and damage and loss estimation.
