James D. McCurdy, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Extension specialist in the department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State UniversityMr. McCurdy received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee-Martin, a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and a Ph.D. from Auburn University. His current research interests include precision weed control, weed ecology and management, herbicide resistance, and wildlife habitat inclusion within the built environment. Mr. McCurdy teaches and advises students studying turfgrass management and weed science. He is an academic liaison for various professional stakeholder groups and performs outreach through MSU Extension’s Sustainable Home Lawn Management Program, the Deep South Turfgrass Expo, and the MSU Turfgrass Research Field Day.
Grady L. Miller, PhD
Professor and Extension Turfgrass Specialist at North Carolina State UniversityDr. Miller’s training was at Louisiana Tech University (B.S.), Louisiana State University (M.S.) and Auburn University (Ph.D.). Prior to coming to NCSU, he was a Professor at the University of Florida. In 2006 he was appointed Professor of Turfgrass Science at North Carolina State University with extension, research, and teaching appointments.
Dr. Miller directs his extension efforts toward general turfgrass management. The focus of his research program is to improve sports field, golf course, urban turfgrass, and utility turfgrass quality through evaluation of turfgrass management practices and procedures. His research activities are centered on cultivar evaluation, irrigation practices, turfgrass nutrition, and athletic field maintenance practices. Dr. Miller currently teaches two University courses annually, the graduate class Applied Research Methods and Analysis for Plant Sciences (CS 755) and Turfgrass Cultural Systems (CS 400).
He is the co-author of four books and has published over 750 articles dealing with all phases of turfgrass management. Dr. Miller is a frequent contributor to www.turfFiles.ncsu.edu. He has been installed in the Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension Outreach at NC State University and Fellow in the Agronomy Society of America.
Timothy J. Schauwecker, PhD
Coordinator, Landscape Contracting and Management degree program at Mississippi State UniversityMr. Schauwecker is a habitat restoration ecologist and landscape contractor with experience in blackland prairies, riparian zones, and coastal uplands. He is a coordinator of the Landscape Contracting and Management degree program in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State University. Mr. Schauwecker current research focus is on bioreactor design and management in the Redbud-Catalpa Creek Watershed of central Mississippi, stream buffer design and management, and habitat management planning at the Pharr Mounds Chickasaw burial site in north Mississippi. His current habitat restoration projects include pollinator meadow establishment at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Mississippi plant in Blue Springs, MS and pollinator habitat establishment and management at the Landscape Architecture Facility on the MSU Campus.

Course Description: This six-hour course focuses on the purpose, applications, design, planting, maintenance and environmental impacts of turf grass, groundcovers and naturalized areas (meadows, prairie, etc.) in the southeastern United States.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify types of turfgrasses and their applications, explore environmental considerations and discuss planting and maintenance strategies.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to compare native and non-native groundcovers, identify which groundcovers are appropriate for sun and shade, and discuss planting and maintenance strategies.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to define what constitutes a meadow and prairie and explore the applications and environmental considerations of meadows.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to locate and comply with land use/local ordinances when planning, planting and maintaining meadows.
