Neil Opfer
Associate Professor with the University of Nevada Las Vegas Civil and Environment Engineering and Construction DepartmentProfessor Opfer teaches coursework in construction management, cost control, cost estimating, structural design, and facility systems. He is also an industry consultant on design and construction issues, construction safety/defects, methods/materials, production, and cost management issues. He earned a B.S. degree in Building Theory, cum laude, a B.A. degree in Business, cum laude, and a B.A. degree in Economics, cum laude, all from Washington State University. Subsequently he earned his M.S. degree in Management (MBA) from Purdue University and his P.D. degree in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds estimating-related certifications as a CEP, CCP, CPC, and is a licensed general contractor in Nevada.

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course focuses on estimating for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems in residential and small commercial projects. The course instructs on calculating materials, equipment, and labor costs for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical systems. A estimating workshop will provide guidance on estimating MEP for a sample residential or small commercial kitchen or bath.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the purpose and types of MEP estimates, identify the sources of estimating data to ensure accurate project planning, and utilize MEP estimating software.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to calculate quantities and costs for various pipes, fittings, and HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, and air-handling equipment.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to estimate plumbing and fire protection systems, including fixtures, standpipe systems, and sprinkler components.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to assess the requirements for electrical systems and develop accurate cost estimates for components based on project specifications.
