Continuing Education Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 6.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Patriot Builders P.F.C. LLC.

Mr. Charles Schultz is the owner of Patriot Builders P.F.C. LLC, a company he has led for 23 years. Over the past decade, he has developed the company’s trademark style of post-frame residential construction known as the “Michigan Pole Barn Home,” a specialty of Patriot Builders. This style of residential post-frame construction is also commonly referred to as a “Barndo” or “Barndominium.” Michigan Pole Barn Homes are designed to be highly energy efficient, structurally strong, and cost-effective. Every blueprint begins with Mr. Schultz’s original pencil-to-paper drawings, and he now offers these blueprints for sale on his website. A frame carpenter by trade, Mr. Schultz has also served as a Zoning Administrator and as an elected township official. He first put his architectural drafting skills to the test in 2014 when he began developing the Michigan Pole Barn Home. Since then, he has led the way in Livingston and surrounding counties, consistently exceeding expectations in energy efficiency, durability, and affordability in post-frame home construction. Mr. Schultz is passionate about innovation and is committed to providing a “good bones first” approach to building. He considers innovation to be his favorite core value.

Course Title:  Designing and Constructing Pole Barn Homes

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This six-hour course explores the design and construction of pole barn homes, from historical context to modern residential applications. It covers layout and space planning, foundations, structural framing, and roofing systems, in addition to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing considerations. The course also addresses applicable building codes, accessibility features, and energy conservation strategies, concluding with real-world case studies and hybrid building approaches.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to compare the lifecycle performance, benefits, and limitations of pole barn homes relative to conventional construction methods.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify layout and design strategies for pole barn homes used as residential, storage, or mixed-use spaces.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to apply International Residential Code requirements and evaluate options for accessibility and energy efficiency.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to assess foundation, framing, roofing, and utility system considerations in the construction and renovation of pole barn homes.
