Decarbonization Program Manager VDOT NEVI Team Environmental DivisionMs. Belt joined VDOT’s Environmental Division as the Decarbonization Program Manager in July 2022. In her role, she manages the deployment of EV charging stations across the Commonwealth through the NEVI Formula Program as well as VDOT’s Carbon Reduction Program. Prior to joining VDOT, she previously worked in construction stormwater for more than 17 years with Virginia DEQ, two Virginia localities and the State of Georgia. She completed her Bachelor’s degrees in Forestry & Wildlife Management and her Master’s degree in Wildlife Management and Ecology at the University of Georgia. Ms. Belt enjoys sustainable homesteading with her husband and cheering on the UGA Bulldawgs.

His firm, focuses on using design to build a better community, enhance livability, reduce construction and operation costs, and protect the environment. As a certified aging in place specialist, certified green professional, and LEED accredited professional he designs projects over a wide array of types from a small kitchen renovation or deck addition to a custom home or a new commercial building. Mr. Hendricks is a member of the Rotary Club of Rockingham County, Chairman of the Shenandoah Valley Partnership, Board member of the Massanutten Technical Center Foundation, Board member of Explore More Discovery Museum, Board member of AIA Central Virginia, and an active member of the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce.
James M. Leaman, Ph.D
Assoc. Professor/Longacre Endowed Chair Director, Business and Leadership Program EMUDr. Leaman chairs the EMU Department of Business and Leadership, where he teaches undergraduate courses in management, finance and economics, and graduate courses in organizational and leadership studies. Industry experience includes both private business and nonprofit administration, including 12 years of service with an international non-governmental organization (INGO) in Kenya. Academic preparation includes a Ph.D. in Public and International Affairs, a master’s degree in Public Administration, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and computer science. The perspective Dr. Leaman adds to his field is analyzing and teaching about the role and impact of business and organizations within ecological limits and dynamic social systems, resulting in an integrated lens of sustainability, stewardship and justice.

Course Description: This seven-hour course addresses current issues in Virginia construction projects, including electric vehicle infrastructure deployment, reducing embodied and operational carbon, sustainable construction value, post-COVID material shortages, green building science, resilient building strategies, and the repurposing of vacant commercial buildings. The course will focus on both contemporary challenges and solutions, as well as promoting sustainability and resilience in construction.

Learners will be able to identify strategies for reducing embodied and operational carbon in construction projects, such as by fortifying building envelopes and utilizing renewable energy sources.

Learners will be able to discuss the science behind green buildings, including indoor air quality challenges and solutions, water conservation strategies, and building envelope considerations.
