Speakers
Mohammad Shafiee, PhD, P.Eng.
Associate Researcher at the National Research Council Canada’s Construction Research CentreDr. Shafiee has several years of research and development experience in transportation geotechnics, pavement mechanics and highway construction materials. Since 2012, he has contributed to more than 27 journal publications and conference proceedings, and he has led and collaborated with different teams on major high-impact projects in climate-resilient pavements and sustainable materials. Some of his recent activities have resulted in development of unique and novel tools such as performance-graded asphalt cement under Changing Climate (PGAC3) and Pavement Adaptation Support Tool (PAST). His work is also related to the use of a innovative and sustainable solution towards circular economy and low-carbon pathways across the pavement sector by using waste by-products and recycled materials in hot-mix asphalt manufacturing.

Course Title: Cool Pavements and Heat-Mitigating Hardscape Design
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: This 2.5-hour course examines how conventional hardscape materials contribute to urban heat islands and explores the design, performance, and application of cool and thermal pavements as a mitigation strategy. It focuses on material properties, site conditions, durability, and integration with stormwater and accessibility considerations to support safer, more comfortable outdoor environments.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain how conventional hardscapes contribute to urban heat islands, including the roles of color, texture, material properties, and heat storage.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify cool and thermal pavement types and describe how solar reflectivity, emissivity, and evaporative cooling influence their performance.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to evaluate site-specific design considerations for cool pavements, including solar exposure, safety, glare, slip resistance, durability, and maintenance needs.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to integrate cool and thermal pavement strategies into site designs that coordinate with stormwater systems, accessibility requirements, and best-practice hardscape planning.
