This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers, 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Ponnapa Prakkamakul, ASLA, PLA, LEED AP ND, SITES AP
Senior Associate Landscape Architect with Sasaki Associates, Inc. in Boston, MAMs. Prakkamakul is a Senior Associate Landscape Architect with Sasaki Associates, Inc. She is a landscape architect with public art and design experience focusing on civic and urban space design. With her expertise in community engagement, creative placekeeping, and participatory design, Ms.Prakkamakul explores the role of landscape architect through the eyes of an artist and social activist. She believes a well-designed landscape is not only functional but also socially engaging in a meaningful way and fosters a sense of belonging. Ms. Prakkamakul holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design where she received the Lowthorpe Fellowship Award upon graduation. She has been a guest lecturer on public art and creative play at Massachusetts College of Arts and Design, Montclair State University, University of New Mexico, Louisiana State University, University of Oregon, and Boston Architectural College. Currently, Ms. Prakkamakul is a senior landscape architect at Sasaki. Prior to joining Sasaki, she was a landscape designer at AECOM in Hong Kong, where she worked on various types of landscape urban design projects in Asia.
Robert Searns
Robert Searns and Associates, Inc. in Littleton, COMr. Searns has a five-decade history of visualizing, planning, and getting trails and greenway projects built. He was project director of Denver’s Platte River and Mary Carter Greenways, which were both national-award-winning projects. He helped plan the Grand Canyon NP Greenway and played a key role in planning the Memphis Wolf River Greenway. He served as national chair of American Trails, was a founding member of the Board of The World Trails Network and was a delegate to the White House Great America Outdoors Conference. He authored Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes (One of 10 “Best Books of 2023” from the American Society of Landscape Architects/ The Dirt) and co-authored Greenways: A Guide to Planning Design and Development, both published by Island Press. He currently writes for the Island Press Short Form Project. He has written for Public Square, Landscape Architecture, American Trails, LA China and Planning magazines and the Island Press Urban Resilience Project. He has hosted numerous Webinars, interviewed on multiple podcasts, and has been a keynote speaker as well as a trainer for the U.S. National Park Service, American Planning Association and the Urban Land Institute. He chaired American Trails and was a founder of The World Trails Network. He was also a delegate to the America’s Great Outdoors White House conclave (President Obama). He resides, writes, hikes and bikes near Denver, Colorado.
Brett Weidl, ASLA, PLA, LEED AP
Principal, Landscape Architect with MKSK in Chicago, ILMs. Weidl has nearly two decades of experience shaping urban spaces and strengthening communities towards increased equity, accessibility, and beauty. She continuously seeks opportunities to strengthen communities by focusing on the people who reside there and the spaces they inhabit. Ms. Weidl leads teams with enthusiasm and devotes herself to clear communication throughout the process, working in tandem with her clients’ needs and focusing on delivering assignments with the highest level of excellence. Her passion lies in creating inclusive landscapes in the urban public realm; enabling equitable access and strengthened connectivity between people and vibrant public spaces; transforming lives and fostering communities through opportunities for shared collective community experiences.
Lanmuzhi Yang, ASLA, PLA
Senior Associate Landscape Architect with Sasaki Associates, Inc. in Boston, MAMs. Yang is a Senior Associate Landscape Architect with Sasaki Associates, Inc. She is a landscape architect, practicing both domestically and internationally, who offers creative insights into park and urban space design across multiple scales. Ms. Yang brings expertise integrating equity and sustainability into public space, transforming the master plan vision to built space, and advocating long term socio-ecological opportunities. With a cross-disciplinary background in architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture, she brings a wide lens to landscape solutions, tackling the complexity of urban projects grounded in each unique social and natural context. Passionate about climate resilience and community engagement, Ms. Yang believes that design is a powerful tool for enhancing the success of a city and people’s everyday lives. She has managed a number of award winning projects and co-led the Sasaki research project Climate.Park.Change. Ms. Yang also speaks frequently at conferences and universities across the world.

Course Description: This three-hour course explores the design and construction of community parks and focuses on specific infrastructure and landscape features, including playgrounds, greenspaces, recreational facilities, water features, gardens, trails and paths.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to incorporate recreational amenities into park design, including playgrounds, green spaces, and sport courts.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to discuss the design and construction of landscape features such as gardens, water features and community gatherings spaces.
