Certified Building Official CEO of Code Educational Opportunities

Mr. Karow is the CEO of Code Educational Opportunities providing education based on current building codes. He also provides service as a building code specialist for design professionals and stakeholders in the industry. Mr. Karow has an extensive background in developing and presenting various types of building code and related seminars. Previous career paths included staff instructor with the International Code Council and with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division. He has instructed in a Building Inspection Technology program at a local community college. Mr. Karow is a certified building official in Minnesota and holds ICC certifications as a Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Code Specialist.

Course Title: Building Classification, Occupancy and Mixed Occupancies

Course Description: This six-hour course explains what building occupancy classifications are, analyzes each occupancy group, describes when and how to change an occupancy classification, and discusses the creation and code requirements of mixed use occupancies.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to define what a building occupancy classification is, determine the appropriate classification for a building, and discuss potentially ambiguous classifications.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify and define each building occupancy group (A, B, E, F, H, I, M, R, S, and U).

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to recognize when to change a building occupancy classification, navigate the process, and understand the consequences.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss the creation and requirements of mixed use occupancies such as accessory occupancies, separated and non-separated occupancies.
