Mr. Backes has over 24 years of experience in various facets of the construction industry. Twelve of those years he worked as operations manager and has taken a special interest in the application of structural concrete. For seven years, he has brought his expertise to the table with Gold’s Concrete in doing crawl space dig outs, crawl space to basement conversions, underpinning, and other technical concrete applications. Today, Mr. Backes runs several crews and oversees several jobs at a time, including but not limited to crawl space conversions.

Mr. Seals has worked with Gold’s Concrete over the years since the beginning in 2001. He developed a practical working knowledge of most things concrete related while his specific skill set remains in administration, sales and marketing. Today he films, creates content and connects with the community by educating and informing on processes of structural concrete installation.

Mr. Seals started his career in his early years doing construction with local construction companies and developed a practical knowledge of the application of concrete, reading plans, setting grade, setting forms, etc. He picked up odd jobs in the neighborhood and in 2001 opened up shop as Gold’s Concrete and Landscaping. The business failed and reinvented itself several times over the years before finally gaining some traction as Gold’s Concrete specializing in basement dig outs and structural underpinning with a strong online presence and educational YouTube channel.

Course Title: Adding Basements to Existing Buildings

Course Description: This six-hour course focuses on the process of adding basements to existing buildings, from feasibility planning through construction. The course will identify applications for adding basements to existing buildings, explain how to assess the feasibility, analyze design and describe how excavation is performed, basement construction processes, and how the basement is integrated with the existing structure.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to assess the feasibility of adding a basement to an existing building by considering the building structure, the site conditions and applicable building codes.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to consider options for raising and/or moving the existing structure for basement excavation and discuss utility and safety concerns.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to analyze basement construction practices for floors, walls, thermal barriers and drainage.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss how the structure is placed onto the basement and how the basement is integrated into the structure with stairs, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
