2024 International Building Code: Occupancy Classifications

Every requirement that follows in a project — egress, fire ratings, allowable area — hangs on one early decision: what group the building falls into. Ten groups, one call to make correctly. This course makes sure you make it right.

Presented By

Joseph Iliff, CBO

Here’s why occupancy classification gets tricky: the line between two groups isn’t always obvious on paper. A space that looks like straightforward retail can tip into Assembly. A daycare can land in Education or Institutional depending on a handful of details. Classify it wrong at the front end, and every code requirement built on top of that classification is wrong too.

This course works through Chapter 3 of the 2024 IBC group by group — Assembly, Business, Education, Factory, Institutional, Mercantile, Residential, Storage, Utility, and Hazard — with a focus on the specific parameters that separate one group from the next. Four hours in, you’ll be able to look at a building’s use and classify it with confidence instead of a guess.
