2024 International Building Code: Code Fundamentals

Most people don’t learn the IBC — they collide with it, one deadline-driven question at a time. This course is the version you wish someone had handed you on day one: how the code is built, how to read it, and how it plays out from permit to occupancy.

Presented By

Joseph Iliff, CBO

Here’s what usually happens: someone gets handed a code question with a deadline attached, opens the IBC cold, and starts hunting. No context for why the code is organized the way it is, no shortcut for finding the right section fast — just trial and error under time pressure. It’s a slow way to work, and it’s the way most people are stuck working.

This course fixes that from the ground up. You’ll get the history and structure behind the 2024 IBC, a real method for navigating it instead of guessing, and a walk-through of how permits, inspections, and certificates of occupancy actually move a project from paper to finished building. Four hours, and the code stops being something you fight and starts being something you use.

What You Get

The full recorded webinar, written materials you’ll actually reach for later, a short quiz to make sure it stuck, and a certificate as soon as you pass it. If you’ve got Knowledge Points sitting on your account, this course runs 4 of them.

What This Actually Covers

1

The Code’s Backstory and Blueprint

  • Why the International Building Code exists in its current form
  • How new provisions get proposed, debated, and adopted — and why that process shapes how you should read the code
  • The code’s scope and structure, mapped out so you’re not searching blind
  • A repeatable way to actually read a code section instead of skimming for keywords
2

From Paperwork to Ground-Breaking

  • What a permit application and construction documents need to actually contain
  • Code requirements specific to temporary structures — the ones people forget to check
  • How fee structures and inspection triggers typically play out on a project
3

Crossing the Finish Line

  • What it actually takes to get a certificate of occupancy issued
  • The definitions section terms people misread most often, explained in plain language

About the Instructor

Joseph Iliff, CBO
