What are we celebrating?
HalfMoon Education turns 30 in 2026. For three decades we have offered live webinars and on-demand continuing education courses that help licensed professionals earn CE credit, meet renewal requirements, and stay current in their fields. The anniversary is a good excuse to look back at how we got here.
HalfMoon started in 1996 with a small team of three, offering continuing education seminars to attorneys around the country. One of our most popular seminars that first year was “The Internet for Attorneys.” It’s a fun memory, and it also speaks to a trait we have held to ever since: a commitment to keeping professionals current on the advancements that will further their careers while satisfying their license requirements.
In the following years, HalfMoon expanded beyond attorneys and into the design and construction professions: engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, land surveying, contracting, floodplain management, planning, and more. HalfMoon hosted hundreds of in-person seminars in every state, year after year, earning a reputation it has proudly carried ever since.
Those seminars were recorded too. Anyone who could not attend in person could buy the self-study version, which arrived as a stack of six CDs in the mail and went back the same way once the coursework was done.
In 2012, HalfMoon became a not-for-profit organization. That same year it acquired Foxmoor Continuing Education, a respected provider of continuing education for attorneys, accountants, and financial professionals, which added two more professions to the list we serve.
By 2019 we had grown from a team of three to thirty-three. The following year was a turning point. When the pandemic ended in-person gatherings, we moved quickly from live seminars to a schedule built mostly on live interactive webinars, and that is where we remain today. Our online webinars are convenient for the busy professional, and bring together people of varying practices from around the country and the world.
On-demand changed just as much. The course that once came as a stack of CDs in the mail now starts the moment you register, so what used to take weeks now takes just seconds. It’s video rather than audio alone, so you can see the presenter’s material as they go, and the sound is a long way from a disc recorded in a seminar room. If your renewal is a week out, you can finish today.
Three decades is long enough to change nearly everything about how a course reaches you. The name is one of the few things we never touched, and it is not a marketing invention
It comes from the white pine lumbering era that built the Chippewa Valley in northwest Wisconsin, the place we call home. Log drives came down the Chippewa and Eau Claire rivers, which meet in Eau Claire, a town that cut and milled so much timber it earned the nickname Sawdust City. Half Moon Lake, an oxbow left behind by an older course of the Chippewa, made a natural holding pond for harvested logs. Seven logging companies worked its shores between 1867 and 1884.
Today that lake wraps around Carson Park, a 134-acre peninsula the city has kept for ball games, fishing, and swimming since 1915. The logs may be long gone, but the lake is still a reminder of the work that built this valley. That is why we are HalfMoon Education.
Thirty years on, HalfMoon Education is still based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and offers dozens of new live continuing education webinars every month to licensed professionals in all 50 states. Whether you need PDH credit, HSW hours, or CE credit for license renewal, you can take the course live or on demand, on your own schedule.
Here’s to the last thirty years of continuing education, and to many more ahead! The sale runs through September 30. Find your next course.
