Mr. Kurdi has engineered (designed, specified and analyzed) government buildings (police stations, sheriff’s offices, fire stations, city halls, court houses, libraries, and jails), housing buildings (affordable, senior, assistant, memory care, adaptable use and student), hospitals, data centers, sport arenas, commercial office buildings, water/wastewater treatment plants and electric utility distribution and substations. Mr. Kurdi’s experience as an electrician includes estimating, laying out, wiring, installing and maintaining electrical systems for residential and commercial buildings. He has served as an engineer on construction projects in numerous locations in Texas, including San Antonio, Arlington, Bryan and Manor. He has developed and taught thousands of seminar hours over the years at Dunwoody College of Technology, Minnesota Electrical Association, IEEE and others. She began her career in the swimming pool industry in 2008 while working for a hospitality architecture design firm. Her role was to provide the engineering to help the firm, and its clients, navigate the new federal laws addressing water safety and accessibility. Ms. Zeis provided guidance to several states in their development of legislation to address the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, ADA and ANSI Regulations. Licensed Architect with Shape Collective A/E, LLC, in Grand Rapids, MIMr. Altman is a licensed architect with extensive experience navigating the complex world of the International Building Code (IBC). Specializing in the multifamily and commercial sectors, he has earned a reputation for translating intricate regulatory requirements into practical design solutions that are effective in real-world applications. He previously worked on the internal code-training team at a mid-sized architecture firm, where he helped keep the design team informed and developed tailored curricula to simplify dense code language and apply it to daily practice. These training sessions addressed major architectural challenges, such as understanding height and area calculations, managing mixed-use separations, and ensuring life-safety through egress strategies. Although much of his work focuses on high-density residential environments, Mr. Altman’s approach to codes is universally applicable. He believes that grasping the reasons behind code provisions is crucial for architects to manage risks and safeguard their firms. As an NCARB-certified architect, he remains current with code updates and state-specific amendments. Construction Management Professor at Bowling Green State UniversityDr. Atalah teaches construction management at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). He has taught and mentored hundreds of construction management students since 2000. Dr. Atalah has written many peer-reviewed-journal and conference papers. He has made hundreds of construction management presentations in many national and international conferences and educational seminars. Dr. Atalah has been involved in the construction of water and wastewater projects since 1984. Brian O’Connell
Shareholder and Chair of the Construction Law Practice Group with Strauss Troy, in Cincinnati, OHWith broad expertise in construction litigation, Mr. O’Connell has represented engineers, architects, contractors and owners in construction-related claims, ranging from cost overruns to property damage, defective work to scope changes, delay to personal injury, acceleration to liquidated damages. Mr. O’Connell recognizes and addresses the challenges facing today’s construction industry. He has tried cases in state and federal courts across the United States.
Mr. O’Connell is also experienced in arbitration and mediation procedures, thereby offering clients the option to choose the best method of conflict resolution for their particular situation. He has successfully tried cases through to judgment in jury trials, to the bench and in arbitration, including multi-week trials in all three types of forums. Based on his 20 plus years of experience in handling construction litigation he has developed a keen sense of where construction projects can go wrong. Mr. O’Connell uses that knowledge to work proactively with clients at the start of projects in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts in order to maximize protections and minimize risk for the client.
He has developed an extensive database, taking industry-recognized standard forms (such as AIA, Consensus Documents, OFCC, and EJCDC documents) and creating contract documents tailored to the individual needs of his clients and the particular needs of the project. Mr. O’Connell has also worked with clients during the course of construction when issues arise on the job, to ensure that problems are properly documented to best position the client in the event the problems devolve into claims. Hein is a consulting civil engineer with over 38 years of experience in the design, evaluation and management of transportation infrastructure. He recently retired from Applied Research Associates, Inc. of Toronto, Canada, where he managed the 90-person Transportation Infrastructure Division in the U.S. and Canada. He is the past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute (ASCE T&DI), and chair of several engineering standards committees. He is a member of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), past-chair of the pavements committee and past member of the Transportation Research Board pavement management, pavement maintenance and pavement preservation committees. He has been a member of the World Road Association (WRA) pavements and asset management committees since 2002. He has experience in survey instrumentation and computer aided drafting (CAD) programs, as well as office and survey programs such as Trimble Office, Carlson and Civil 3D. Management experience includes overseeing drafting and field crews, as well as a branch office for an Oil and Gas services firm in southeast Texas. Mr. White works with clients across a variety of industries, including iron and steel, utilities, specialty chemicals, food and food additive processing, and petroleum refining. He has expertise in industrial wastewater and stormwater regulatory review and implementation support under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Program. Mr. White earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and an M.S. degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan.
