While obtaining a degree in Land Survey Engineering and Civil Engineering at Purdue University, Mr. Jahn started working with very talented and respected individuals who shaped his career path. After graduation and around the same time he became a licensed professional surveyor, and also obtained an MBA from Anderson University. Mr. Grabske specializes in real estate and complex business litigation. His practice is focused on assisting landowners, businesses, and public agencies with eminent domain, inverse condemnation, contract disputes, land use and environmental issues. Mr. Grabske has successfully represented clients in high stakes trials and before the Court of Appeals. Mr. Grabske has also been recognized as a “Rising Star” in Los Angeles magazine’s Southern California Super Lawyer edition.

Mr. Hansen litigates disputes involving real estate law, land use, environmental matters, and commercial transactions. He frequently litigates, writes about, and teaches at conferences on easements and boundary disputes. Mr. Hansen graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies from Biola University in La Mirada, California. He earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Among his many interests and community involvements, Mr. Hansen serves as an officer with the Real Property Section of the Sacramento County Bar Association and as a Dispute Resolution Conference pro-tem judge for the El Dorado County Superior Court. 

Mr. Hensley is an accomplished trial lawyer. With close to 40 years of experience helping his clients resolve disputes – through trials, arbitrations, mediations, and appeals – he’s argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court as well as all Southern California State and Federal courts. In addition, he’s often asked to assist clients across the country and as a result has made a number of pro hac vice appearances before various Federal and State courts throughout the United States. Throughout his career, Mr. Hensley has been involved in lawsuits related to a wide range of corporate disputes, from real estate, securities, and corporate governance issues, to trade secrets, employment matters, unfair competition, and California financing laws. He has significant experience defending class action lawsuits. Finally, Mr. Hensley has an active real estate and appellate practice covering both transactional and litigation matters: he’s helped clients structure and defend mechanics liens, purchase agreements, commercial leases, homeowner’s disputes, commercial common area maintenance disputes, subordination agreements, financing arrangements, and more.

Mr. Offord graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2005. Thereafter, he remained in Santa Barbara to work at a general litigation firm before attending law school at Santa Clara University and earning his J.D. degree in 2009. As a student at Santa Clara, he was named top of his class (receiving the CALI or the Witkin Award) in four of his courses, in addition to graduating on the Dean’s List. Mr. Offord joined the firm in 2009 after clerking for a law practice that primarily focused on real estate litigation and transactions. His experience includes law and motion practice and all stages of civil trials, including serving as lead counsel in many bench and jury trials. He has participated in State and Federal trials. He is heavily involved in the local real estate community, with an active role in several local real estate associations. He has also obtained his Real Estate Broker’s License from the California Department of Real Estate. He is regularly asked to be a speaker for local real estate organizations and brokerages, including SILVAR, Santa Clara County Association of Realtors®, and San Mateo County Association of Realtors®. He has also guest lectured at Menlo College for the Real Estate Law and Introduction to Law courses. At Brewer Offord & Pedersen LLP, Mr. Offord works on matters representing real estate professionals and homeowners involved in neighbor and property disputes, as well as on commercial leasing matters and homeowner association issues.

She holds a master’s degree in Environmental Policy and has been involved in surveying since 1974 in projects ranging from construction to boundary to environmental land use disputes. Ms. Lathrop is also a certified floodplain manager through the Association of State Flood Plain Managers (ASFPM) and a Certified Floodplain Surveyor through the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors. A former adjunct instructor at Mercer County College in New Jersey, she has also taught as part of the team for the licensing exam review course at Drexel University in Pennsylvania. Ms. Lathrop has been teaching seminars for surveyors since 1986 and has been writing articles for surveyors since 1983. She is a contributing editor for The American Surveyor magazine, and she has four articles included in the American Bar Association’s text, Land Surveys: A Guide for Lawyers and Other Professionals. She and Stephen V. Estopinal, PLS, PE co–authored a book titled Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions: Composition, Construction, and Comprehension, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. in 2011. Mr. Ashwell practices in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation, land use and zoning, domestic relations, estate planning and real estate. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Dayton School of Law, Dayton, Ohio, and his B.A. degree from Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. Mr. Ashwell was named a Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Star, 2017-2021. He has served as a frequent speaker at CLE classes and seminars related to land use, zoning, easements and ethics in boundary law.

Ms. Curtin is an associate attorney whose practice focuses on civil litigation with an emphasis on land use, business litigation, estate litigation, and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Ms. Curtin earned her law degree from Washington & Lee University in 2020. While in law school, she served as President of the Federalist Society and Vice President of the Washington & Lee Veterans’ Advocates. During her third year, she served as a judicial extern for the Hon. Judge J. Fred Watson of the Virginia 24th Circuit. Ms. Curtin received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Roanoke College in 2015, where she graduated magna cum laude with honors. While at Roanoke, she was a four-year starting goalie for the women’s lacrosse team and the recipient of a full academic scholarship.

Mr. Derdeyn’s practice focuses on the areas of commercial and real estate litigation, employment law, and general business law. He also serves as general counsel to a number of local businesses. His litigation experience includes litigating claims for individuals and businesses in state and federal courts in the areas of commercial litigation, real estate, construction, employment, and landlord-tenant law. He has litigated and resolved matters involving partnership and shareholder disputes, trade secret violations, fraud, business torts, defamation, tortious interference with contract, breach of contract, wrongful termination, discrimination, violations of the Uniform Commercial Code, violations of the Consumer Protection Act, real property disputes, and trust and estate matters, among others.

Mr. Peeples focuses his practice in the areas of maritime and riparian law, construction law, worker’s compensation, and national security. A prolific author, he has written articles on Virginia aquaculture and maritime law, including the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, the Virginia Primary Sand Dune and Beaches Act, and the Virginia Tidal Wetlands Act. Mr. Peeples has been published in a number of professional journals on a variety of topics, ranging from Virginia real property law to the Anti-Terrorism Act. He is a member of the firm’s waterfront law practice group, and writes blog articles regularly on the group’s website devoted to waterfront (riparian) property rights law, maritime and admiralty law, and environmental law. He has also taught CLE courses on the topic of riparian rights throughout the Commonwealth. Before joining the firm in 2018, Mr. Peeples retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service as a pilot. He completed seven combat deployments and served as the Commanding Officer of a helicopter squadron. His last assignment was Lead Rotational Planner for the Joint Staff, where he provided strategic advice to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Adams is CEO of 1UP Aerial Drone Service, which sells drones and sensors, and provides expert consultation & aerial services to a range of industries, including engineering, commercial real estate, land development, construction, insurance, forensic science, & surveying. Mr. Adams is an FAA Part 107 certified pilot, and a tenured information technology and cloud industry veteran who has spent more than 25 years in the high-tech industry: the last 7 in UAS, AI, and machine learning.

Prior to his service at TVA, Mr. Savage was in private survey practice for 10 years specializing in dispute resolution and expert witness services. He has surveyed several disputed state boundaries to resolve jurisdictional conflicts. Mr. Savage is an adjunct professor at Cleveland State Community College where he teaches courses in boundary law, geodesy, GIS, and surveying fundamentals. He has researched and retraced the historical surveys of Henry David Thoreau and has published several articles on the subject. Mr. Savage teaches exam review and continuing education seminars at various state and local conferences across the country.

Mr. Ohm’s teaching, research, and outreach focus on the legal and institutional framework for planning. Mr. Ohm joined the UW faculty in 1994, and he holds a joint appointment with the University of Wisconsin Extension where he is the state specialist in land use law, environmental regulation, and growth management. He also has affiliate appointments with UW’s Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies. Mr. Ohm served as chair of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning from 2008 – 2012. Prior to joining the faculty at UW, Mr. Ohm worked as an attorney for the Metropolitan Council, the regional governing body for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. While at the Council he was involved in numerous regional planning initiatives involving land use, affordable housing, natural resources, transportation, governance, and local public service delivery. Prior to that he worked as an attorney in private practice for the Minneapolis law firm then known as Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman, Ltd., where he specialized in litigation involving land use, eminent domain, and complex securities fraud. Mr. Ohm holds a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School, a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College with majors in History and Political Science.

Mr. Tobin enjoyed a robust full-service practice for 15 years of his career with both transactional and litigation experience. He represented property owners, business owners, and in-house counsel across a variety of industries, such as technology, banking / financial services, real estate, construction, and outdoor advertising. He worked with clients during every phase of the business cycle, from contract negotiation to courtroom advocacy, including handling a multi-million dollar transactions and litigating complex commercial disputes in Texas and federal court. Meridian Geospatial provides technician training and continuing education seminars for the land surveying industry. Mr. Horton served in the US Air Force and with the Illinois Department of Transportation in planning, design, construction, surveying and maintenance of civil engineering projects including commercial structures, airfields, utility systems and highways, earning his PE license in 1991. Joining the full-time faculty at Parkland College in Champaign, IL, in 1998, he taught land surveying and construction management courses. He founded the land surveying associate degree program at Parkland College in 2001. Working during summers for local engineering firms, he earned his PLS license in 2007. Beginning in 2009, Mr. Horton presented seminars frequently with HalfMoon Education Inc., ultimately speaking in 42 states. He continues to provide training with HalfMoon, with several professional associations and for various private clients. Mr. Horton’s top priority is providing practical skill training for survey technicians. In more than 25 years as a real estate adviser and litigator, he has established himself as a trusted source of business-minded counsel for developers and other entities. He works to defend and advance client interests in matters related to land use and zoning, condemnation/eminent domain, tax increment financing (TIF), acquisitions and dispositions, public-private partnerships, government affairs and redevelopment agreements, annexation, title disputes and real estate valuation disputes. Mr. Asaro has handled numerous significant real estate development projects in and around Chicago for governmental, private and public-private partnership entities. Ms. Shah assists with commercial real estate transactions and land use planning and development. Before joining the firm, she clerked for the Honorable Stuart A. Minkowitz, Assignment Judge for the Superior Court of New Jersey, from August 2021 through August 2022. During her clerkship, Ms. Shah facilitated in resolving actions in lieu of prerogative writs, including challenges to land use and development applications and local zoning ordinances, and assisted with condemnation/eminent domain cases. While in law school, she served as a legal intern with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. Notably, she supported assistant U.S. attorneys in a health care fraud case by researching and reviewing relevant case studies and preparing memoranda to further support the investigation. Ms. Shah also completed two judicial externships. She first worked for the Honorable Michael A. Shipp, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and then for the Honorable Esther Salas, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. In both positions, Ms. Shah assisted the judges in drafting orders and opinions in connection with motions to dismiss and motions for summary judgment. Ms. Michas focuses her practice on land use, tax increment financing (TIF), government procurement, and government relations. She has extensive experience representing property owners and real estate developers in securing all types of land use entitlements, including planned developments, zoning amendments, special uses, variations, and public way approvals for a wide range of commercial and residential projects. Ms. Michas has worked on behalf of clients in complex residential and commercial zoning matters throughout the City of Chicago, including appearing before the Chicago City Council Committee on Zoning, Chicago Plan Commission, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals, and numerous city departments. Dr. Meyer is a professor in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at UConn’s College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR). He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and he is a fellow and past president (2016, 2019) of the American Association for Geodetic Surveying. Dr. Meyer is a past president (2006-2007) of the Geomatics Society of New England (previously known as the New England Section ACSM) and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Surveying Engineering and Surveying and Land Information Science. Dr. Meyer earned his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University (College Station, 1998) where he was a research associate in the Mapping Sciences Laboratory. He was named a UConn Teaching Fellow (2015), and he has taught geomatics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in geodesy, geographic information science, digital terrain modeling, spatial statistics, and global navigation satellite system surveying. Dr. Meyer has authored an undergraduate-level geodesy textbook and numerous peer-reviewed papers about surveying and mapping, and he teaches professional education seminars for surveyors throughout New England and the United States.

Mr. Banks is the principal attorney at Banks & Associates, PLLC, a Houston-based law firm focused on meeting the needs of government and construction contractors throughout Texas. He is a trusted advisor for licensed professionals, CEOs and managers in construction firms, and government contractors. Mr. Banks was licensed as a CPA in 2003 and has more than 20 years of experience as a lead accountant and CFO for successful government contractors. He earned his B.B.A. degree with a double major in Accounting and Finance from the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston and secured his J.D. degree from South Texas College of Law. Mr. Pasheilich represents clients in environmental litigation and provides counseling as to a wide range of environmental matters, including regulatory compliance and enforcement related to air, water and solid & hazardous waste media.  Gary advises clients regarding environmental due diligence for commercial property transactions, offering advice and strategies for reducing potential liability risks.  Prior to entering private practice, Gary served as an Assistant Ohio Attorney General in the Environmental Enforcement Section, representing the State of Ohio and the Director of Ohio EPA.

Mr. Pempus has been a risk manager for more than 18 years, with experience in architecture, engineering, land use, law and professional liability insurance, and a unique and well-rounded background in the construction industry. Prior to risk management, he has 25 years of experience in the practice of architecture and engineering, and as an adjunct professor teaching professional practice courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the last 37 years. As a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and AIA National Ethics Council 2021 chair, he has demonstrated his impact on architectural profession. He is a licensed architect, attorney and property and casualty insurance agent.

Ms. Skulski has more than 30 years of professional experience as a consultant, instructor, and researcher advocating for the inclusion of people with disabilities in parks, recreation, and tourism. She has diverse expertise in the Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility standards specific to recreation facilities and outdoor recreation environments, program access provisions required under Title II of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, accessibility assessments, transition planning, and universal design.  Jennifer is the Principal of Skulski Consulting LLC and the publisher of Accessibility Management News, a monthly e-newsletter focusing on the news, emerging trends, people making access happen, and top things every ADA/504 Coordinator should know to make their job in accessibility management easier.

Ms. Holmok’s experience has centered on stormwater control, weather resiliency, and pedestrian experiences in challenging urban sites. As a Landscape Architect, Ms. Holmok has been designing green & blue elements for over 26 years. Notable projects include design and oversite of ultra-urban green infrastructure elements integrated within the two-mile, six-lane expansion of the City of Philadelphia’s I-95 (Girard) project; Akron’s Citywide Green Infrastructure Toolbox, including design of green and complete Aqueduct Street, and the Kelly (CSO Rack 3) Green Project; one-mile long City of Cleveland’s $9 million dollar Fleet Avenue Complete and Green Street; Cuyahoga River Bank stabilization projects for the National Park Service; and numerous green infrastructure retrofit demonstration projects in the City of Cleveland.

Mr. Bryant focuses his practice on construction law. He writes and negotiates construction contracts for private and public projects, representing participants including owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, and subcontractors. Mr. Bryant resolves construction project performance and payment disputes, including surety bond claims and mechanics lien claims. He also represents owners and contractors in litigation matters including defense and prosecution of breach of contract, warranty, and construction defect claims. Mr. Bryant has defended design professionals against claims of professional negligence. He has written and spoken on many construction-related topics, including contract negotiation, public construction, and licensure of construction professionals. Among other organizations, he is a member of the Steering Committee of the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law Division 7 for Insurance, Surety, and Liens.

Mr. Fischer has over 30 years of experience in the survey field, performing a variety of survey types for residential, municipal, commercial, industrial and government agency clients. He has experience in survey instrumentation and computer aided drafting (CAD) programs, as well as office and survey programs such as Trimble Office, Carlson and Civil 3D. Management experience includes overseeing drafting and field crews, as well as a branch office for an Oil and Gas services firm in southeast Texas. A former adjunct faculty member for the Engineering Department at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, he holds professional land surveyor licenses in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi and Texas.

Richard F. Friedman is experienced in municipal law, real estate law, public finance, litigation, eminent domain, historic preservation, employment law and appellate practice. Mr. Friedman is a managing member and has been affiliated with Neal & Leroy, LLC since 1983. Prior to joining Neal & Leroy, LLC, Mr. Friedman was a member of the City of Chicago Law Department’s Appeals and Review and Finance Divisions. Mr. Friedman represents clients in appeals at all state and federal levels. Mr. Friedman was awarded a diversity and inclusion grant for his teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Friedman was named a 2019 Leading Lawyer in Land Use, Zoning, and Condemnation Law.

Mr. Olsen is a Senior Professional Land Surveyor with Engineering Design Source, Inc., a Civil Engineering and Surveying Firm based in Chesterfield, Missouri. He has more than 30 years’ experience as a professional land surveyor, beginning in the Chicago metropolitan area. Mr. Olsen is currently licensed as a land surveyor in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Texas. He has been fortunate to have worked on numerous Highway Department/Department of Transportation horizontal and vertical control surveys, land acquisition and topographic surveys, County Transportation Department Plats of Highway, and Municipal Highway Department surveys. Mr. Olsen has also worked on many commercial and residential developments throughout northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. He is currently enrolled in the University of Maine Graduate School in the Eng. D. (Doctor of Engineering) Engineering Technology/Surveying Engineering Program. Mr. Olsen has an MS in Engineering Technology/Surveying Engineering from the University of Maine and a BA in Mathematical Sciences. He has presented seminars and webinars previously with HalfMoon Education on topics including Law and Ethics of Illinois Land Surveying; Locating Land Boundaries on Paper (and on the Ground); Complying with Minimum Standards of Practice; Handling Ethical Issues in Land Surveying Practice; Complying with the Illinois Plat Act; Complying with National Society of Professional Surveyors Creed and Canons.

Mr. Wance is a shareholder and former chair of Buchalter’s Land Use Practice Group. He has built a cross-disciplinary practice involving land use and entitlements, water resources, environmental compliance, natural resources, and public law through the representation of both public agencies and private businesses throughout California. Mr. Wance has handled all aspects of these substantive areas, from advising clients regarding the applicability of the law, to guiding clients through a permitting or entitlement process, or defending clients subject to enforcement actions. He successfully represented businesses and public agencies in sophisticated financial, real estate, water resource, environmental compliance, and land development matters in court and before administrative agencies. Mr. Wance’s land use and entitlement background includes representation of residential developers, public entities, major industrial facilities, and other commercial businesses in all phases of project development before local and state agencies, city councils, and county board of supervisors. He has assisted clients in obtaining development and environmental permits and project approvals for power plants, schools, mixed-use, and industrial development projects.

Mr. Horneman, PLS/GISP, has been working in the survey/geospatial field since joining the U.S. Army Reserves in 1984 as a geodetic surveyor. He attended the Defense Mapping School (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) in Fort Belvoir for geodetic surveying and received continuing education at the U.S. Army Professional Development Institute, the Community College of the Air Force, and various conferences, acquiring more than 400 continuing education credits in surveying, mapping, geology, GIS, and engineering. Mr. Horneman’s experience over the past 40 years includes surface and underground mining surveying, design and permitting, boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, subdivisions, construction surveying, GIS oversight, oil and gas wells and pipelines, and consulting. He has worked with several small to large private engineering and survey firms, as well as the U.S. Government (U.S. Army Reserves, U.S. Air Force Reserves, and as a civilian with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers). Mr. Horneman retired from the Reserves as a Master Sergeant with 24 years of service. He currently works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, as the Deputy Chief of Real Estate/Chief of the Geospatial Branch for cadastral projects and GIS base mapping. Mr. Horneman is also managing his own firm, Horneman Surveying, LLC. He has been teaching professional classes for the last 15 years in various continuing education venues, including Half Moon Education, PSLS, and WVSPS. Mr. Horneman is licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York, and is also a GIS Professional. He is a past president of the PSLS Southwest Chapter and has served as the PADEP‐PSLS Liaison Committee chair and on the Geospatial Committee and Legislative Committee. Mr. Horneman resides in Natrona Heights, PA, with his wife Sharon of 32 years, living near his four grown sons (two which are surveyors) and two grandchildren.

Gary Kent is in his 40th year with Schneider Geomatics in Indianapolis – having transitioned to part-time status in 2020. He also provides training, consulting and expert witness services as manager and owner of Meridian Land Consulting, LLC. He served as chair of the Joint ALTA/NSPS Committee responsible for the ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey standards from 1995 to 2021. He has also served on the Indiana State Board of Registration for Professional Surveyors since 2004 and is a past-president of both ACSM and the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors. Mr. Kent has presented programs on boundary law, easements and rights of way, surveying standards and practice, and leadership multiple times in all 50 states.
