Meridian Geospatial provides technician training and continuing education seminars for the land surveying industry. Mr. Horton served in the US Air Force and with the Illinois Department of Transportation in planning, design, construction, surveying and maintenance of civil engineering projects including commercial structures, airfields, utility systems and highways, earning his PE license in 1991. Joining the full-time faculty at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, in 1998, he taught land surveying and construction management courses. He founded the land surveying associate degree program at Parkland College in 2001. Working during summers for local engineering firms, he earned his PLS license in 2007. Beginning in 2009, Mr. Horton presented seminars frequently with HalfMoon Education Inc., ultimately speaking in 42 states. He continues to provide training with HalfMoon, with several professional associations and for various private clients. His top priority is providing practical skill training for survey technicians. Dr. Hermansen is a professional land surveyor, professional engineer, and attorney at law. He earned his undergraduate degree and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, his M.S. degree in Surveying and Mapping from the University of Wisconsin, and a law degree from West Virginia University. He taught law, engineering, and surveying at the University of Maine, and he actively practices in the areas of land development, real estate, construction, professional liability, mediation, arbitration, and boundary location. Dr. Hermansen is the author or co-author of several articles and law reviews on surveying, land development, easements, and boundary retracement, including several Maine State Bar Association practice series.

Mr. Nechamen was the Floodplain Coordinator for the State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation for 21 years. During that period, he helped to promote higher floodplain standards in New York, including enacting a two foot “freeboard” requirement in New York’s building code, saving property owners millions of dollars in flood losses and flood insurance premiums.
One of the founders of the New York State Floodplain and Stormwater Managers Association (NYSFSMA), a professional association with over 600 active members, He was their first Chair and currently serves the Association as its treasurer.
Mr. Nechamen has been a Board member of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) at various times for 13 years. ASFPM represents over 15,000 professionals across the United States and internationally and is a key national voice in policies designed to reduce flood risk while preserving the natural and beneficial functions of floodplains. He served as chair (2013-2015), vice-chair (2011-2013) and treasurer (2008-2010) and is currently co-chair of the Floodplain Regulations Committee. Mr. Nechamen has received the ASFPM Meritorious Lifetime Achievement in Floodplain Management Award.
In his capacity as Floodplain Coordinator, he has led workshops and training sessions on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), floodplain management and regulations, understanding and interpreting flood maps, flood insurance and the Community Rating System.

Mr. Helfrich has been principal land surveyor with Craig R. Knoche & Associates, P.C. and its successor Koru Group PLLC in the Chicago area for the last 30 years. Mr. Helfrich first picked up a plumb bob in 1971 for Webster & Associates. From tape-and-transit to GPS, mortgage surveys to shopping centers, he has his seal on billions of dollars of commercial, residential and institutional developments and transactions in 23 counties in Illinois together with consulting and managing projects in 15 other states. Mr. Helfrich has enjoyed working with countless prominent developers, attorneys and other professionals in the field and the office. His specialties include real estate law, boundaries and boundary law, easements, rights-of-way and other encumbrances and servitudes, statutory and common-law plats, ALTA surveys, topography, building and site layout, construction- and project-management as well as land development consulting. He has presented classes and co-written manuals with the Illinois Institute For Continuing Legal Education along with classes at the University of Illinois and HalfMoon Education. Mr. Helfrich is a member of the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association.

Prior to his service at TVA, Mr. Savage was in private survey practice for 10 years specializing in dispute resolution and expert witness services. He has surveyed several disputed state boundaries to resolve jurisdictional conflicts. Mr. Savage is an adjunct professor at Cleveland State Community College where he teaches courses in boundary law, geodesy, GIS, and surveying fundamentals. He has researched and retraced the historical surveys of Henry David Thoreau and has published several articles on the subject. Mr. Savage teaches exam review and continuing education seminars at various state and local conferences across the country.

Mr. Davis is a professional land surveyor in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia, with over 30 years of experience. This varied experience includes small individual boundary surveys, surveys for both commercial and residential land development projects, ALTA Land Title Surveys, and surveys for long range transportation projects, including rail and highway. In addition, Mr. Davis is an adjunct faculty professor at the Community College of Baltimore County in the Surveying/ Civil Engineering program. Classes taught include Elementary Surveying, Survey Computations, Topographic Mapping, Sediment Control and Hydrology, and Storm Drain Design. In 2016, Mr. Davis was awarded the Russell E. Lowman Memorial Educational award from the Maryland Society of Surveyors for his contribution to the education of surveyors.

Ms. Lathrop is licensed as a professional land surveyor in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, and as a professional planner in New Jersey. She holds a master’s degree in Environmental Policy and has been involved in surveying since 1974 in projects ranging from construction to boundary to environmental land use disputes. Ms. Lathrop is also a certified floodplain manager through the Association of State Flood Plain Managers (ASFPM) and a certified floodplain surveyor through the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors. A former adjunct instructor at Mercer County College in New Jersey, she has also taught as part of the team for the licensing exam review course at Drexel University in Pennsylvania. Ms. Lathrop has been teaching seminars for surveyors since 1986 and has been writing articles for surveyors since 1983. She is a contributing editor for The American Surveyor magazine, and she has four articles included in the American Bar Association’s text, Land Surveys: A Guide for Lawyers and Other Professionals. She and Stephen V. Estopinal, PLS, PE co–authored a book entitled Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions: Composition, Construction, and Comprehension, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. in 2011. She is also on the faculty of GeoLearn, a web-based educational provider. Ms. Lathrop is a past president of the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors and of the National Society of Professional Surveyors, and she has served on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Geodetic Surveying.

Ms. Crespo is vice president of planning at RVi. She is a certified land use planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) with over 17 years of professional planning experience in Southwest Florida. Ms. Crespo has managed both private and public sector projects for a diverse range of clientele, including privately initiated rezoning and comprehensive plan amendment applications, community facilitation and visioning, and land development code amendments and policy formulation for local governments. As vice president of planning she oversees the company’s planning efforts across our six (6) offices in Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa, Maitland, and Orlando.

Mr. Holloway practices in the areas of litigation and local government law. He represents municipalities, local governments, and private clients in matters relating to land use, permitting, code enforcement, and eminent domain. He also handles litigation matters throughout all phases, including drafting pleadings, directing discovery, and researching and drafting dispositive motions. Mr. Holloway frequently appears before Florida courts, the Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH), and a variety of state and local bodies. He also has extensive experience with issues relating to public records law, appeals, and Florida’s Land Use and Environmental Dispute Resolution Act.

Ms. McBride is an associate in Hahn Loeser’s Litigation Practice Area. She represents clients in eminent domain and complex commercial litigation. Within her litigation practice, Ms. McBride has developed a specialized knowledge of eminent domain law. She leverages her knowledge of government and construction regulations to guide clients through eminent domain proceedings, from the initial acquisition phase through litigation. In addition to her eminent domain practice, Ms. McBride represents clients in commercial and equipment/loan enforcement, creditors’ rights, and collections litigation. 

Mr. Whitt is a trial-tested attorney with 35 years of experience, concentrating his trial practice in the areas of business litigation, eminent domain and real estate disputes. Mr. Olsen is a Senior Professional Land Surveyor with Engineering Design Source, Inc., a Civil Engineering and Surveying Firm based in Chesterfield, Missouri. He has more than 30 years’ experience as a professional land surveyor, beginning in the Chicago metropolitan area. Mr. Olsen is currently licensed as a land surveyor in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Texas. He has been fortunate to have worked on numerous Highway Department/Department of Transportation horizontal and vertical control surveys, land acquisition and topographic surveys, County Transportation Department Plats of Highway, and Municipal Highway Department surveys. Mr. Olsen has also worked on many commercial and residential developments throughout northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. He is currently enrolled in the University of Maine Graduate School in the Eng. D. (Doctor of Engineering) Engineering Technology/Surveying Engineering Program. Mr. Olsen has an MS in Engineering Technology/Surveying Engineering from the University of Maine and a BA in Mathematical Sciences. Mr. Goss has more than 35 years of experience providing services in real estate development, zoning, subdivision, construction, leasing, and municipal law. He represents developers, homeowners’ associations, banks, contractors, subcontractors, and governmental entities including counties, cities, and special political subdivisions. Mr. Goss and his clients operate across numerous related industries like home building, lending, land development, commercial development, commercial leasing, and public/private incentive financing. Notably, he originated and drafted legislation providing development rights for qualifying TAD special districts and has represented clients in matters related to NID, CIDs and TIFs. Mr. Goss has also handled the legalities of multiple parcel land assemblage, transect zoning codes, annexation of property, site plans, and subdivision and regulatory approvals. He was one of the principal drafters of ASTME1528 relating to the establishment of transaction screens for environmental site assessment in real estate transactions. Mr. Goss has assisted in numerous amendments to Missouri Statutes, represented stakeholders, drafted legislation, and presented testimony to House and Senate Committees. He is licensed to practice in Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota. As co-chair of the firm’s Real Estate, Zoning & Public Finance Service Group, he is tasked with ensuring the continual development of the firm’s attorneys and oversees the services the team provides across the Midwest.

Mr. Henry received his undergraduate degree in 1987 from Missouri State University where he graduated cum laude and his law degree in 1990 from Washington University, St. Louis. He serves as the only Missouri member of the Owners’ Counsel of America. This organization is by invitation only and consists of fewer than 50 eminent domain attorneys from across the entire United States who represent property owners in eminent domain/condemnation matters. Mr. Henry has served The Missouri Bar in many capacities over the years. He currently is the chair of the Eminent Domain Committee. In the past, he has served as a member of the Board of Governors and as chair of several committees. His efforts on behalf of the Bar were recognized when he was awarded the Distinctive Service Award by the Solo and Small Firm Committee of The Missouri Bar. Mr. Henry was an associate editor of the Washington University Law Quarterly and is the co-author of numerous publications on eminent domain law, including: Trial of Exceptions in Missouri Condemnation Cases, St. Louis Bar Journal (Spring 2007); Inverse Condemnation: Airplane Noise and Damages, The Southwestern Legal Foundation, 1995; and two chapters in the Missouri Condemnation Practice Handbook (Third Edition, 2002 Supp.), co-authoring chapters on Inverse Condemnation and Taxation. He is a former editor of the American Bar Association Committee on Condemnation Newsletter. Mr. Henry is a frequent speaker on issues pertaining to eminent domain law. Another interest of Mr. Henry is the use of technology in the practice of law.

Dr. Kerski is a geographer and educator focused on GIS-based curriculum development, research in the effectiveness of GIS in education; professional development for educators; communication about the need for geographic skills, tools, and perspectives through keynote addresses, articles, social media, and workshops; and fostering partnerships to support GIS in education. He has given two TED talks and has created over 5,000 geo-related videos. Dr. Kerski also teaches online and face-to-face courses at primary and secondary schools, through MOOCs, and universities such as Sinte Gleska University, Penn State, and the University of Denver. He is active in educational nonprofit organizations, including NAAEE, AAG, and NCSS, and he served as president of the National Council for Geographic Education. After serving as geographer at NOAA, US Census Bureau, and USGS, since 2006 Dr Kerski has served as education manager for Esri, providing thought leadership in geospatial technologies in formal and informal education at all levels, internationally. He has written books such as Interpreting Our World, Spatial Mathematics, International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning with GIS in Secondary Schools, The Essentials of the Environment, Tribal GIS, and The GIS Guide to Public Domain Data. As a lifelong learner, Dr Kerski feels as though he’s just getting started and thus actively seeks mentors, partners, and collaborators.

Mr. Bricklin has extensive litigation experience representing environmental groups, individuals, municipalities, and Tribes in a wide variety of environmental and land use matters. He has argued the Methow Valley case in the United States Supreme Court and has made frequent appearances before the Growth Management Hearings Boards, Shorelines Hearings Board, and other judicial and administrative tribunals. Mr. Bricklin provides consultation services to municipalities in the development of land use regulations and comprehensive plans and defending municipalities when challenged by dissatisfied land use applicants. He assists environmental organizations in drafting legislation. Mr. Bricklin co-authored Model Toxics Control Act (State Superfund law) and Initiative 547 (precursor to Growth Management Act). Mr. Bricklin is the past president of Washington Environmental Council and past co-chair of Washington Conservation Voters. He is a founding member/board member, Futurewise (formerly 1000 Friends of Washington) (1991-2021). Mr. Bricklin formed Bricklin & Gendler partnership with emphasis on environmental and land use law in 1982 and formed Bricklin Newman Dold partnership in 2002. He is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education seminars, including a presentation on land use law to the Washington State Appellate Judicial Conference.

Mr. Carmichael practices in land use planning and permitting, water law, municipal law, and real estate. He represents property owners, businesses, water and sewer districts, and municipalities on land use, water, real estate, and environmental issues. Mr. Carmichael is an experienced and creative problem solver, effective in litigation, and has a strong record of success in helping clients reach their objectives. He helps clients with transactions and in matters before city and county governments, hearing examiners, state boards, and in court. Mr. Carmichael joined the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s Office in 1984 where he served as a Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in both the criminal and civil divisions, before joining Simonarson, Visser, Zender, & Thurston (a predecessor to Carmichael Clark) in 1992.

Mr. Garlant represents municipal, regional, and private clients in litigation proceedings involving diverse issues including contract disputes, condemnation, and matters of municipal code interpretation. He advises clients on land use, real estate, and environmental matters, providing transactional assistance related to contract drafting and due diligence review. Mr. Garlant assists clients in obtaining land use entitlements and other permits. He also has experience litigating federal natural resource matters, including disputes arising under the National Environmental Policy Act, the federal Endangered Species Act, and the National Forest Management Act. Mr. Garlant uses both science and the law to effectively advocate for comprehensive solutions for clients.

Mr. McKenzie is an experienced real estate and commercial litigator, assisting small businesses, individuals, and large institutional clients in Washington and California with a wide variety of litigation involving, inter alia, lien priorities, boundary disputes, real estate fraud, quiet title, easements, title insurance, adverse possession, construction defects, probate litigation and administration, and general business litigation. His Washington practice is geographically concentrated in Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Kitsap counties. As a licensed real estate broker in both Washington and California, Andrew is familiar with real estate transactions and disputes surrounding broker and escrow duties. Andrew has successfully won and defended against claims of up to $9M. He takes a pragmatic approach to all matters, recognizing that both litigation and settlement efforts must be tailored to both the facts and the amount in controversy. Before joining the firm in 2018, Andrew worked in the commercial litigation group of an AmLaw 100 firm. Outside of work, Andrew enjoys playing piano, singing, hiking, traveling abroad, and spending time with his large family. He has sung professionally and performed at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

Catherine has been practicing in the areas of land use and real estate, municipal law, and water law since 2016. She advises cities, special purpose districts, developers, and individuals mostly in and around Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, and Island Counties.

While obtaining a degree in Land Survey Engineering and Civil Engineering at Purdue University, Mr. Jahn started working with very talented and respected individuals who shaped his career path. After graduation and around the same time he became a licensed professional surveyor, and also obtained an MBA from Anderson University. His first touch of land surveying was drafting a ‘Base’ and ‘Zoning’ Map for Cannelton, Indiana. LJahn@hwcengineering.com passion to is work and coaching, but Mr. Jahn’s overall love is my family. He’s been practicing as a licensed surveyor since 2009 for multiple firms in the greater Indianapolis area.

Mr. Grabske specializes in real estate and complex business litigation. His practice is focused on assisting landowners, businesses, and public agencies with eminent domain, inverse condemnation, contract disputes, land use and environmental issues. Mr. Grabske has successfully represented clients in high stakes trials and before the Court of Appeals. Mr. Grabske has also been recognized as a “Rising Star” in Los Angeles magazine’s Southern California Super Lawyer edition.

Mr. Hansen litigates disputes involving real estate law, land use, environmental matters, and commercial transactions. He frequently litigates, writes about, and teaches at conferences on easements and boundary disputes. Mr. Hansen graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in American Studies from Biola University in La Mirada, California. He earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Among his many interests and community involvements, Mr. Hansen serves as an officer with the Real Property Section of the Sacramento County Bar Association and as a Dispute Resolution Conference pro-tem judge for the El Dorado County Superior Court. 

Mr. Hensley is an accomplished trial lawyer. With close to 40 years of experience helping his clients resolve disputes – through trials, arbitrations, mediations, and appeals – he’s argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court as well as all Southern California State and Federal courts. In addition, he’s often asked to assist clients across the country and as a result has made a number of pro hac vice appearances before various Federal and State courts throughout the United States. Throughout his career, Mr. Hensley has been involved in lawsuits related to a wide range of corporate disputes, from real estate, securities, and corporate governance issues, to trade secrets, employment matters, unfair competition, and California financing laws. He has significant experience defending class action lawsuits. Finally, Mr. Hensley has an active real estate and appellate practice covering both transactional and litigation matters: he’s helped clients structure and defend mechanics liens, purchase agreements, commercial leases, homeowner’s disputes, commercial common area maintenance disputes, subordination agreements, financing arrangements, and more.

Mr. Offord graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2005. Thereafter, he remained in Santa Barbara to work at a general litigation firm before attending law school at Santa Clara University and earning his J.D. degree in 2009. As a student at Santa Clara, he was named top of his class (receiving the CALI or the Witkin Award) in four of his courses, in addition to graduating on the Dean’s List. Mr. Offord joined the firm in 2009 after clerking for a law practice that primarily focused on real estate litigation and transactions. His experience includes law and motion practice and all stages of civil trials, including serving as lead counsel in many bench and jury trials. He has participated in State and Federal trials. He is heavily involved in the local real estate community, with an active role in several local real estate associations. He has also obtained his Real Estate Broker’s License from the California Department of Real Estate. He is regularly asked to be a speaker for local real estate organizations and brokerages, including SILVAR, Santa Clara County Association of Realtors®, and San Mateo County Association of Realtors®. He has also guest lectured at Menlo College for the Real Estate Law and Introduction to Law courses. In addition, Mr. Offord has been a speaker for both the Santa Clara County and San Mateo County Bar Associations. At Brewer Offord & Pedersen LLP, Mr. Offord works on matters representing real estate professionals and homeowners involved in neighbor and property disputes, as well as on commercial leasing matters and homeowner association issues.

Mr. Ashwell practices in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation, land use and zoning, domestic relations, estate planning and real estate. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Dayton School of Law, Dayton, Ohio, and his B.A. degree from Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. Mr. Ashwell was named a Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Star, 2017-2021. He has served as a frequent speaker at CLE classes and seminars related to land use, zoning, easements and ethics in boundary law.

Ms. Curtin is an associate attorney whose practice focuses on civil litigation with an emphasis on land use, business litigation, estate litigation, and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Ms. Curtin earned her law degree from Washington & Lee University in 2020. While in law school, she served as President of the Federalist Society and Vice President of the Washington & Lee Veterans’ Advocates. During her third year, she served as a judicial extern for the Hon. Judge J. Fred Watson of the Virginia 24th Circuit. Ms. Curtin received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Roanoke College in 2015, where she graduated magna cum laude with honors. While at Roanoke, she was a four-year starting goalie for the women’s lacrosse team and the recipient of a full academic scholarship.

Mr. Derdeyn’s practice focuses on the areas of commercial and real estate litigation, employment law, and general business law. He also serves as general counsel to a number of local businesses. His litigation experience includes litigating claims for individuals and businesses in state and federal courts in the areas of commercial litigation, real estate, construction, employment, and landlord-tenant law. He has litigated and resolved matters involving partnership and shareholder disputes, trade secret violations, fraud, business torts, defamation, tortious interference with contract, breach of contract, wrongful termination, discrimination, violations of the Uniform Commercial Code, violations of the Consumer Protection Act, real property disputes, and trust and estate matters, among others.

Bryan Peeples is a Pender and Coward shareholder and focuses his practice in the areas of maritime and riparian law, eminent domain/right of way law, and worker’s compensation. A prolific author, he has written articles on Virginia aquaculture and maritime law, including the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, the Virginia Primary Sand Dune and Beaches Act, and the Virginia Tidal Wetlands Act. He has been published in a number of professional journals on a variety of topics, ranging from Virginia real property law to the Anti-Terrorism Act. Mr. Peeples is a member of the firm’s waterfront law practice group, and writes blog articles regularly on the group’s website devoted to waterfront (riparian) property rights law, maritime and admiralty law, and environmental law. Before joining the firm in 2018, he retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service as a pilot. He completed seven combat deployments and served as the Commanding Officer of a helicopter squadron. His last assignment was Lead Rotational Planner for the Joint Staff, where he provided strategic advice to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Adams is CEO of 1UP Aerial Drone Service, which sells drones and sensors, and provides expert consultation & aerial services to a range of industries, including engineering, commercial real estate, land development, construction, insurance, forensic science, & surveying. Mr. Adams is an FAA Part 107 certified pilot, and a tenured information technology and cloud industry veteran who has spent more than 25 years in the high-tech industry: the last 7 in UAS, AI, and machine learning.

Prior to his service at TVA, Mr. Savage was in private survey practice for 10 years specializing in dispute resolution and expert witness services. He has surveyed several disputed state boundaries to resolve jurisdictional conflicts. Mr. Savage is an adjunct professor at Cleveland State Community College where he teaches courses in boundary law, geodesy, GIS, and surveying fundamentals. He has researched and retraced the historical surveys of Henry David Thoreau and has published several articles on the subject. Mr. Savage teaches exam review and continuing education seminars at various state and local conferences across the country.
