All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Continuing Education Credit Information
This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in Colorado and offers an optional 6.0 hour learning opportunity to professional engineers and landscape architects in Colorado.

Engineers, architects, and landscape architects seeking continuing education credits in other states may be able to claim the hours earned from this course. Refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.0 LU|HSWs (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the AIA/CES.

The Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.0 HSW PDHs. Only full participation is reportable to the LA CES.

HalfMoon Education is an approved CM Provider with the American Planning Association. This course is registered for CM | 6 for Certified Planners.

Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the webinar for those who attend the entire course and score a minimum 80% on the quiz that follows the course (multiple attempts allowed).

Speakers

Lori Catalano

Lori Catalano’s background in professional practice and her teaching experience are closely linked. She is a licensed and practicing landscape architect in Colorado and an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University. Prior to teaching, she designed and managed projects ranging from small private spaces to large master plans for parks and college campuses with both public and private clients resulting in several Colorado ASLA awards. As an experienced teacher, her research and creative work are closely related to and integrated with her teaching. Her research topics include strategies for helping students move beyond their fear and resistance during the design process, changing the planting aesthetic for the arid West, and meaningful community engagement. These topics directly relate to her experience in both teaching and practice; she is compelled to integrate her knowledge, experience, and passion with the desire to inspire students to address challenges associated with the environment and society.

Deryn Davidson

Sustainable Landscape State Specialist with Colorado State University Extension

Ms. Davidson is an experienced extension agent with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry and providing outreach and education to Coloradans. Her horticulture skills focus on native plants, water conservation, pollinator habitat, and design. She is skilled in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Environmental Awareness, Adobe Photoshop, and Submittals. Ms. Davidson is a strong research professional with a BS degree in Horticulture from Colorado State University and an MLA degree in Landscape Architecture from University of Arizona.

Jim Knopf

Jim Knopf has an MLA from the University of Michigan, is registered in the State of Georgia, and has taught at the Universities of Georgia and Colorado. “Boulder landscape architect Jim Knopf’s “The Xeriscape Flower Gardener” is, hands down, the best garden guide for the beginner flower gardener who also is concerned with water conservation. All these years later, it’s not uncommon to see a shopper with a well-worn copy, bristling with sticky notes, at plant sales and garden centers. Just as indispensable to shrub and tree selection (plus groundcovers, vines and lawn grass) is Knopf’s companion volume “Waterwise Landscaping with Trees, Shrubs and Vines.” – Marcia Tatroe, 2006 Denver Post

Paul W. Lander PhD MLarch LEED A.P.

Paul W. Lander, PhD, MLarch, LEED A.P. , has over 40 years of experience in the conservation field- land, energy, and water, including 16 years leading the City of Boulder, Colorado’s award-winning water conservation program. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Geography, and on the Faculty for the professional degree, Masters of the Environment, both at the University of Colorado. He currently teaches about urban water systems, western water, and landscape.

Patty Rettig

Patty Rettig is the archivist for the Water Resources Archive at the Colorado State University Libraries. Ms. Rettig has built the archive to hold over 130 distinct collections documenting Colorado’s water heritage by engaging with the water community across the state. This involves working with people throughout the university as well as with state and federal agencies, ditch companies, businesses, and individuals. She earned her Master of Library Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her B.A. in English from Wittenberg University. She has been with the Water Resources Archive since its beginning in 2001. Ms. Rettig works with individuals and organizations across the state to save historic documents related to Colorado’s water resources. She assists students, faculty, and other researchers in using the archival collections. She also conducts extensive outreach–articles, exhibits, and presentations–to further the cause of preserving the state’s water heritage.

Course Title: Xeriscaping in Colorado

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course is intended to assist design professionals in creating xeriscapes; landscapes which are intended to eliminate the need for irrigation. This course explains what xeriscaping is, how to design a xeriscape, the various drought-tolerant plants, and high-efficiency irrigation.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss what xeriscaping is, consider climate zones, soil and precipitation, review relevant definitions, and identify water conservation requirements and goals.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to create a landscape design by utilizing and choosing appropriate soils, groundcovers, hardscaping, and artificial turf.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to incorporate drought-tolerant plants (xerophytes) into their designs such as cactus, trees, shrubs and perennials with a focus on native species.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to analyze high-efficiency irrigation systems, how to use recycled water and irrigate select landscape elements if needed.
